Small Ball:
Clark's O.N.T.—51 balls of one self-shading color; 48 balls of second self-shading color; and 45 balls each of a third and fourth self-shading color.
or
J. & P. COATS—34 balls of one self-shading color; 32 balls of second self-shading color; and 30 balls each of a third and fourth self-shading color.

Big Ball:
J. & P. COATS—17 balls of one self-shading color; 16 balls of second self-shading color; and 15 balls each of a third and fourth self-shading color.

GAUGE … Each motif measures 3 inches from point to opposite point across center, and 2⅝ inches from side to side, before blocking. For a tablecloth about 60 x 80 inches, make 737 motifs.

FIRST MOTIF OF FIRST STRIP … Starting at center, with first color, ch 10, join with sl st. 1st rnd: Ch 3, 2 d c in ring; (ch 1, 3 d c in ring) 5 times, ch 1, sl st in 3rd ch of ch-3. Now pick up the back loop of each d c throughout. 2nd rnd: Ch 3, d c in same place as sl st, * d c in next d c, 2 d c in next d c, ch 2, 2 d c in next d c. Repeat from * around. Join last ch-2 with sl st to 3rd st of ch-3. 3rd rnd: Ch 3, d c in same place as sl st, * d c in next 3 d c, 2 d c in next d c, ch 3, 2 d c in next d c. Repeat from * around; join.
   4th rnd: Sl st in next 3 d c, ch 8 (to count as tr and ch-4), skip 2 d c, s c in last d c of this d c-group, * ch 4, s c in 1st d c of next d c-group, ch 4, skip 2 d c, tr in next d c. Ch 4, skip 2 d c, s c in last d c of same group. Repeat from * around. Join last ch-4 to 4th ch of ch-8. 5th rnd: * Ch 4, 2 tr in same place as sl st, holding back the last loop of each tr on hook; thread over and draw through all loops on hook, ch 1 to fasten (a cluster made). Ch 4, sl st in ch-1 of cluster (a p made). Ch 4, sl st at base of cluster, ch 4, cluster in same place as last sl st, ch-4 p, ch 2, skip next ch-4. In next ch-4 loop make tr, ch 1 and tr. Ch 2, 2 tr in next tr, holding back on hook the last loop of each tr, and complete a cluster. Ch-4 p, ch 4, sl st at base of cluster. Repeat from * around, ending with cluster in place where first 2 clusters were made, p, ch-4, sl st at base of cluster. Fasten off.

SECOND MOTIF … With second color, work as for first motif until the first cluster of 5th rnd is completed. Then work as follows: Ch 1, sl st in p of corresponding cluster on first motif, ch 1, sl st back in ch-1 of cluster on 2nd motif, ch 4, sl st at base of same cluster, ch 4, cluster in same place as last cluster. Now make a p, joining it to corresponding p on first motif as first 2 p's were joined. Continue as for 5th rnd of first motif, joining next 2 p's of motif in work to the 2 adjacent p's of first motif as before and complete rnd (no more joinings). Join and fasten off. Make 27 more motifs, alternating first and second colors, joining to previous one as second was joined to first, having five clusters free at each side between joinings.
   Join second strip of motifs to left of first strip, beginning from top of chart as follows:

FIRST MOTIF OF SECOND STRIP … With third color, work as for second motif of first strip, joining 4 p's as before to 4 p's of first motif of first strip, leaving a cluster, a 2-tr group and a cluster free between joinings.

SECOND MOTIF OF SECOND STRIP … With fourth color, work as for second motif of first strip until first cluster on 5th rnd is completed. Ch 1, s c in 3rd free p of second motif of first strip, counting from joining. Continue as for 5th rnd of second motif of first strip until 2 more p's are joined. Join the next p to joining where p's of first strip were joined. Continue as before until 2 more p's are joined. Join next p to next joining. Then join the next 3 p's as before and complete rnd. Fasten off. Follow chart from right to left for joining of motifs; detail in upper right-hand corner shows sequence of colors.
