MATERIALS:
CLARK'S O.N.T. or J. & P. COATS BIG BALL BEST SIX CORD MERCERIZED CROCHET, size 30:
Clark's O.N.T.—7 balls of White or Ecru.
J. & P. Coats—7 balls of White or Ecru, or 10 balls of any color.
MILWARD'S Steel Crochet Hook No. 11.

The above materials are sufficient for a luncheon set consisting of 4 place mats, each 10½ x 17 inches; and a center mat 14 x 28 inches.

GAUGE … Each motif measures 3¼ inches square before blocking.

PLACE MATS (Make 4)—FIRST MOTIF … 1st rnd: Starting at center, * ch 5, 2 tr in 5th ch from hook, holding back the last loop of each tr on hook; thread over and draw through all 3 loops on hook, ch 1 to fasten (a cluster made). Ch 4, sl st in tip of cluster (a p made), ch 4, sl st in base of cluster. Repeat from * 7 more times. Join with sl st to base of 1st cluster. 2nd rnd: Ch 6, remove hook, place last ch-6 at back of work, insert hook in p at tip of 1st cluster and draw dropped loop through. Ch 3, 8 d c in same p (a shell made). Make 9 d c in p at tip of next 7 clusters. Join with sl st to 3rd ch of ch-3.
   3rd rnd: * S c in next d c, (ch 4, skip 1 d c, s c in next d c) 3 times. Ch 1, skip last d c of this shell and 1 d c of next shell. Repeat from * around. Join last ch-1 to 1st s c made. 4th rnd: Sl st to center of next loop, s c in same loop, * ch 3, in next loop make (d c, ch 4, sl st in 4th ch from hook—a p made—ch 1) 3 times. D c in same loop, ch 3, s c in next loop, ch 2, skip ch-1 sp, s c in next loop. Repeat from * around. Join last ch-2 to 1st s c made. Fasten off. 5th rnd: Attach thread and make s c in center p above one shell, * ch 12, d tr in center p above next shell, ch 15, d tr in same p (this is corner). Ch 12, s c in center p above next shell. Repeat from * around. Join to 1st s c.
   6th rnd: Ch 6, skip 3 sts, d c in next st, (ch 3, skip 3 sts, d c in next st) 4 times. * Ch 3, tr in next st, ch 3, d c in next st—corner. (Ch 3, skip 3 sts, d c in next st) 10 times. Repeat from * around. Join last ch-3 to 3rd st of ch-6. 7th rnd: * In next sp make half d c and 2 d c. In next d c make tr, ch-4 p and tr. In next sp make 2 d c and half d c. Skip next d c. Repeat from * 2 more times. In tr make d c, 2 tr, p, 2 tr and d c (corner). In next sp make half d c, and 2 d c. In next d c make tr, p and tr. In next sp make 2 d c and half d c. Continue in this manner around, working other corners as for first corner. Join and fasten off.

SECOND MOTIF … Work first 6 rnds as for first motif. 7th rnd: * In next sp make half d c and 2 d c. In next d c make tr, ch-4 p and tr. In next sp make 2 d c and half d c; skip next d c. Repeat from * 2 more times. In tr make d c, 2 tr, ch 2, sl st in corner p of first motif, ch 2, 2 tr back in same place as last 2 tr on second motif. Continue as for 7th rnd of first motif, joining next 7 p's to adjacent p's of first motif as previous p was joined (no more joinings). Complete as for first motif.
   Make 3 x 5 motifs, joining motifs as second was joined to first (where 4 corners meet, join 3rd and 4th corners to joining of other corners).

CENTER MAT … Make 4 x 8 motifs, joining as for place mats. Block pieces to measurements given.
