MATERIALS: Chadwick's Red Heart Afghan Wool, 34 skeins (1 oz. skeins) of Renaissance Blue for Afghan stitch strips. For narrow strips, 6 skeins of Wine Rose; 5 skeins each of Tapestry Rose, Renaissance Rose and Antique Rose; and 3 skeins of Light Rose.
A casein Afghan hook No. 6 (4½ mm. size).
Milward's Casein Crochet Hook No. 6.

Gauge: (Afghan stitch) 5 sts make 1 inch; 5 rows make 1 inch.

AFGHAN STITCH STRIPS (Make 5) … Starting at narrow end, with Renaissance Blue and Afghan hook ch 35. 1st row: Insert hook in back loop of 2nd ch from hook and pull loop through; draw up a loop in each of next 33 ch, retaining all loops on hook (35 loops). This is half of row. Work other half as follows: Yarn over and pull through 1 loop; * yarn over and pull through next 2 loops on hook. Repeat from * across until 1 loop remains on hook. 2nd row: * Insert hook in vertical bar of next loop and pull loop through. Repeat from * across. Now work other half of row as before. Continue in this manner until piece measures 70 inches. Fasten off. Work a row of s c along both long edges.

CLUSTER STRIPS (Make 4) … Attach Wine Rose to right-hand corner at bottom of one Afghan stitch strip, and work along one long side as follows: 1st row: Ch 2, * insert hook in same st where s c was made and pull loop through; draw this loop out to measure ¾ inch; yarn over. Repeat from * 3 more times; draw through all loops on hook (a loop-cluster). ** Skip 2 sts, s c in next st, ch 2 and complete another loop-cluster. Repeat from ** across, ending with s c in last st. Fasten off. 2nd row: Attach Tapestry Rose, ch 2 and complete a loop-cluster at tip of 1 st cluster, * s c at tip of next cluster, ch 2 and complete a cluster as before. Repeat from * across, ending with s c in 2nd st of turning ch. 3rd, 4th and 5th rows: Same as 2nd row, using Renaissance Rose for 3rd row, Antique Rose for 4th row, and Light Rose for 5th row. 6th to 9th rows incl: Repeat 4th, 3rd, 2nd and 1st rows. Fasten off.
   Sew strips together, having Afghan stitch strips at outer edges. With Wine Rose work a row of s c all around, making 3 s c at each corner; join. Now work a rnd of s c in each of these colors: Tapestry Rose, Renaissance Rose, Antique Rose and Light Rose, making 3 s c at corners and joining at end of each rnd. Now work another rnd of Wine Rose. Join and break off.
