MATERIALS: Chadwick’s Red Heart Afghan Wool, 44 skeins (¾ oz. skeins) of Mexicana and 24 skeins (1 oz. skeins) of Black.
Milward's Casein Crochet Hook No. 5.

Gauge: When joined, motif measures 5¾ inches between opposite corners.

MOTIF … Starting at center, with Mexicana ch 3, join with sl st. 1st rnd: Ch 3 (to count as d c); in ring make 2 d c, ch 3; (3 d c, ch 3) 3 times; join to ch-3 first made. 2nd rnd: Ch 3, * in next ch-3 sp (corner) make 3 d c, ch 3, 3 d c; repeat from * 2 more times. In next ch-3 make 3 d c, ch 3, 2 d c; join. 3rd rnd: Ch 3, 2 more d c in sp between groups; * in next ch-3 (corner) make 3 d c, ch 3, 3 d c; 3 d c in next sp. Repeat from * to last corner; join. 4th rnd: Ch 3, 3 d c in next sp, * in corner sp make 3 d c, ch 3, 3 d c; 3 d c in next 2 sps. Repeat from * around, ending with 2 d c in sp preceding ch-3; join. Fasten off. Attach Black at sp following joining, ch 3 to count as d c; work around, making 3 d c in each sp, and (3 d c, ch 1, 3 d c) in each corner; join. Fasten off.
   Make 158 motifs. See chart. Crochet motifs together with s c's on wrong side, picking up a single loop at back of each motif for each s c, thus forming ridges on right side.

EDGING … Attach Black at lowest corner of lowest motif at right. Keeping work flat, work s c to sp following next corner of same motif; ch 2, in next sp make 4 d c; ch 3, sl st in top of last d c made (p); 4 more d c in same sp (a shell), ch 2, s c in next sp, ch 2, 4 d c in next sp; 4 d c in 1st free sp on next motif, ch 2, s c in next sp, ch 2, shell in next sp, s c around to sp following corner of same motif. Continue thus around Afghan. Fasten off.
