Heigh Ho Collar Pattern #2293

Materials: J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 1 ball of Turquoise.
Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Six Strand, 1 skein each of Black and Red.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 8 or 9.

Starting at neck edge, ch 133 (to measure about 15 inches), turn. 1st row: S c in 2nd ch from hook, s c in each ch across (132 sts). Ch 1, turn. 2nd and all even rows: S c in each s c across, increasing 10 sts at equal distances apart. (To increase, make 2 s c in 1 s c.) Ch 1, turn. 3rd and all uneven rows: S c in each s c across. Ch 1, turn. Continue thus until 24 rows are completed (252 s c in last row). Next row: S c in each s c across. Ch 1, turn. S c in each of 27 s c. Ch 1, turn. Work over these 27 s c only, increasing 1 st on the next row. Then work 2 rows without increasing. Inc. 2 sts on the following row. Work 5 rows without increasing. (This completes one deep section.) * Break off. Skip next 18 sts of 25th row, attach thread in next st, and work over next 27 sts as before. Repeat from * across collar (6 long sections and 5 short sections made).

Embroidery. Attach 12 strands of Black Six Strand at neck edge of center front. Working over these strands with 6 strands of Red, work a row of cross stitches closely together down center front edge, along lower edge of long section and up to neck edge (thus dividing off long section from short section). Skip 1⅛ inches at neck edge, and divide off next long section with cross stitches. Continue in this manner across. Then work a row of cross stitches at lower edge between long sections (see illustration).

Buttons. Starting at center, ch 2. 1st rnd: 5 s c in 2nd ch from hook. Join with sl st. 2nd rnd: 2 s c in each s c around. 3rd and 4th rnds: S c in each s c around. Hereafter * s c in next s c, skip next s c, s c in next s c. Repeat from * around until all sts have been worked off. Pull thread through last loop, and break off, leaving a 6-inch length for sewing button to collar. With Black Six Strand, work 1 cross stitch on top of button; then work a Red cross stitch over this one. Make another button same as this.

Sew one button to each side of collar, as in illustration, and fasten with chain loops.
