Materials: Choose one of the following threads:
Clark's O.N.T. Mercerized Crochet, 4 balls of White or Ecru, size 20, for collar; and 1 ball each of Dk. Red and Medium Blue, size 30, for cord.
J. & P. Coats Mercerized Crochet, 3 balls of White or Ecru, size 20, for collar; and 1 ball each of Dk. Red and Medium Blue, size 30, for cord.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 7.

Starting at narrow edge, make a chain to measure 4 inches long. 1st row: Insert hook in 2nd ch from hook, * thread over and draw loop through, thread over and draw through 1 loop, thread over and draw through remaining 2 loops (1 double s c made), insert hook in lower loop of double s c and make an s c, skip 1 ch, insert hook in next ch. Repeat from * across, ending row with double s c. Ch 2, turn. 2nd row: Skip 1st double s c, double s c in next s c, * s c in last loop of double s c just made, skip next double s c of previous row, double s c in next s c. Repeat from * across, making last double s c in turning ch. Ch 2, turn. Repeat 2nd row until piece measures 30 inches, taking care not to inc. on ends. Break off.

Find center of collar and mark with a pin (15 inches on each side of pin-mark). Make six ⅜-inch tucks on each side of pin-mark at equal distances apart, starting at neck edge and graduating tuck into nothing ½ inch from lower edge, and leaving ¾ inch free on either side of pin-mark.

Edging. 1st row: Attach Medium Blue at left corner of neck edge and, working along outer edges of collar, * skip 1 st, in next st make: 3 d c, ch 2, 3 d c; skip 1 st, s c in next s c (1 shell made). Repeat from * to corresponding position at opposite side. Break off. 2nd row: Attach Dk. Red in ch-2 of 1st Medium Blue shell, * in next s c make: 3 d c, ch 2, 3 d c; s c in ch-2 of next shell. Repeat from * across. Break off.

Cord. Measure off four 3-yd. lengths of Dk. Red, and twist tightly; then double twisted strands and give them a second twist in the opposite direction. Make a Medium Blue cord in same way. Then join both cords to form a long cord, and twist again. Double twisted cords, thus forming a cord of combined colors.

Pass cord through tucks, ¼ inch from neck edge and sew to collar at both front neck edges, allowing 16 inches of cord between these 2 points, and letting ends hang for ties.

Tassels (Make 2—1 Dk. Red and 1Medium Blue). Wind thread around three fingers 100 times; then pull a double strand through the loops on fingers, and tie securely. Wind a piece of same thread around tassel, about ¼ inch from top, and tie. Cut loops at opposite end and trim evenly. Sew a tassel to each end of cord.
