The * is used in repeating – ‘repeat from *’ – means to repeat everything that follows the last *.

Parentheses ( ) are used to repeat everything inside the ( ) a given number of times or to explain a stitch.

Chain = ch; Stitch = st; Slip Stitch = sl st; Single Crochet = sc; Double Crochet = dc.

This pattern contains directions for two crocheted planter-hangers worked with either a single strand of Double Quick (8-Cord) Cotton or a double strand of Bedspread Cotton.

MATERIAL REQUIREMENTS AND SIZES

Original Holders made of Lily Double Quick (8-Cord) Cotton.

A bowl approximately 5½ inches in diameter and 2½ inches in height is re­quired for Bowl Plant Holder.
NOTE: If making both bowl planters - two bowls will be required; also an extra skein of Double Quick or Bedspread Cotton required.

SECOND PLANTER BOWL

NOTE: If making both bowl holders – the bowl holders are the same – one hanging chain is shorter than the other.

MAKE 2 IF BOTH HOLDERS ARE DESIRED –

1ST ROUND: Starting at bottom of holder, with a single strand of Double Quick or a double strand of Bedspread Cotton ch 3, join with a sl st to form a ring, ch 1, work 8 sc into ring, join with a sl st in first sc.

2ND ROUND: Do not turn in this or following rounds, ch 1, 2 sc in same st as last sl st, 2 sc in each remaining sc around, join with a sl st in first sc.

There are 16 sc in last round.

3RD ROUND: Ch 1, 1 sc in same st as last sl st, * 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in next sc; repeat from * around, end with 2 sc in last sc, join with a sl st in first sc.

There are 24 sc in last round.

4TH ROUND: Ch 1, 1 sc in same st as last sl st, 1 sc in each remaining sc around, join with a sl st in first sc.

5TH ROUND: Ch 1, 1 sc in same st as last sl st, 1 sc in next sc, * 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of next 2 sc; repeat from * around, end with 2 sc in last sc, join with a sl st in first sc.

There are 32 sc in round.

6TH ROUND: Ch 1, 1 sc in same st as last sl st, 1 sc in each of next 2 sc, * 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of next 3 sc; repeat from * around, end with 2 sc in last sc, join with a sl st in first sc.

There are 40 sc in round.

7TH ROUND: Ch 1, 1 sc in same st as last sl st, 1 sc in each of next 3 sc, * 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of next 4 sc; repeat from * around, end with 2 sc in last sc, join with a sl st in first sc.

There are 48 sc in round.

8TH ROUND: Repeat 4th round.

9TH ROUND: Ch 1, 1 sc in same st as last sl st, 1 sc in each of next 4 sc, * 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of next 5 sc; repeat from * around, end with 2 sc in last sc, join with a sl st in first sc.

There are 56 sc in last round.

10TH AND 11TH ROUNDS: Repeat 4th round twice.

12TH ROUND: Ch 3, skip same st as last sl st, 1 dc in each of next 6 sc, * ch 3, 1 dc in each of next 7 sc; repeat from * 6 times, end with ch 3, join with a sl st in top st of ch 3 at beginning of round.

There are 8 (7-dc groups – counting ch 3 at beginning of round as 1 dc) with ch 3 be­tween groups in the last round.

13TH ROUND: Ch 3, skip same st as last sl st, 1 dc in each of next 4 sts, work a 2-joined dc over next 2 sts as follows: work (thread over hook, insert hook in next st, thread over and pull through st, thread over and through 2 loops on hook) twice, thread over and through all 3 loops on hook, * ch 2, 1 sc in center st of next ch loop, ch 2, a 2-joined dc over first 2 sts of next dc group, 1 dc in each of next 3 sts, a 2-joined dc over last 2 sts of same dc group; repeat from * 6 times, end with ch 2, 1 sc in center st of next ch loop, ch 2, skip ch 3 at beginning of round, join with a sl st in next dc.

14TH ROUND: Ch 3, skip same st as last sl st, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, a 2-joined dc over next 2 sts, * ch 7, skip next ch loop, next sc and next ch loop, a 2-joined dc over first 2 sts of next dc group, 1 dc in next dc, a 2-joined dc over last 2 sts of same dc group; repeat from * around, end with ch 7, skip next ch loop, next sc, next ch loop and ch 3 at beginning of round, join with a sl st in next dc.

There are 8 (3-dc groups) with ch 7 between groups in last round.

Note: A 2-joined dc is counted as one stitch.

15TH ROUND: Ch 3, skip same st as last sl st, a 2-joined dc over next 2 sts, * ch 4, 1 sc in center st of next ch loop, ch 4, work a 3-joined dc over next 3 sts of dc group as follows: work (thread over hook, insert hook in next st, thread over and pull through st, thread over and through 2 loops on hook) 3 times, thread over and through all 4 loops on hook; repeat from * around, end with ch 4, 1 sc in center st of last ch loop, ch 4, join with a sl st in first 2-joined dc.

16TH ROUND: Ch 1, 1 sc in same st as last sl st, * ch 8, skip next ch loop, next sc and next ch loop, 1 sc in next 3-joined dc; repeat from * around, end with ch 8, join with a sl st in first sc.

There are 8 (ch-8 loops) with 1 sc between ch loops in last round.

17TH ROUND: Ch 1, 1 sc in same st as last sl st, * work 7 sc in next ch loop, 1 sc in next sc; repeat from * around but end last repeat with 7 sc in last ch loop, join with a sl st in first sc.

There are 64 sc in last round.

HANGING CORDS – 18TH ROUND: For shorter holder ch 60; for longer holder ch 70 – for hanging cords – work a sl st in 2nd st from hook and in each remaining st of ch, work a sl st in each of next 16 sc of last round of holder – for shorter holder ch 60; for longer holder ch 70 – for 2nd hanging cord, work a sl st in 2nd st from hook and in each remaining st of ch; break off.

FINISHING: Using a darning needle and matching color thread, crossing hanging cords as Illustrated, sew free end of each cord to opposite side edge of holder. Place on a small wooden rod as Illustrated.
