Sun Ray Hat Pattern

HEADSIZE 21 INCHES

Materials: J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, or Clark's O.N.T. Cronita, 1 ball each of color 68 Skipper Blue and 70 Blue Jewel. Milward's steel crochet hook No. 1 and No. 7.

Work very loosely. Starting with Skipper Blue and No. 1 hook, ch 3, join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: 8 half d c in ring. 2nd rnd: 2 half d c in each st of previous rnd. 3rd rnd: * 1 half d c in next st, 2 half d c in next (this is an increase), and repeat from * around. 4th to 12th rnds incl: 1 half d c in each st, and 2 half d c over each increase. 13th and subsequent rnds: 1 half d c in each st (no in­creases or decreases) until crown is depth desired.

Brim. With No. 7 hook and Skipper Blue, ch 19, turn. 1st row: 1 d c in 4th st from hook and in each of next 7 sts, 1 half d c in each of next 8 sts, ch 1, turn. 2nd row: 1 half d c in each of first 8 sts, 1 d c in each of next 8 sts, ch 3, turn. 3rd row: 1 d c in each of first 8 sts, 1 half d c in each of next 8 sts, ch 1, turn. 4th row: Same as 2nd row. Break thread. Attach Blue Jewel. 5th to 88th rows incl: Repeat 3rd and 4th rows, changing colors after every 4 rows. Work should be long enough to go around headsize. Join both ends with sl st, then sl st the brim to the crown.

Top Trimming. Ch 9, and work same as brim having 3 d c and 3 half d c to the row and changing colors at end of every 2nd row. Continue until there are 4 sections of each color. Join both ends with sl st, and sew to top of crown as illustrated.
