MATERIALS:
CHADWICK'S RED HEART BABY BUNT­ING POMPADOUR, 1 ball (¾ oz. ball).
Steel Crochet Hook No. 2/0 (double zero).
3 small pearl buttons.

   Cap is made of 2 halves joined together along center top. Pieces have a tendency to cup while working but steaming flat­tens them perfectly. 1st rnd: Ch 4, 12 dc in 4th ch from hook. Do not join rnds and work loosely throughout. 2nd rnd: Thread over, insert hook (from front of work) between starting chain and 1st dc, pass hook behind 1st dc and insert it (from back of work) between 1st and 2nd dc, thread over and draw loop through (thread over and draw through 2 loops,) twice (raised st made around dc); in next dc make dc and sc; thread over, insert hook (from front of work) between 2nd and 3rd dc and (from back of work) between 3rd and 4th dc and draw loop through. Complete raised st around dc as before, in next dc make dc and sc. Make raised st around next dc and continue thus around, ending with dc and sc in last dc. 3rd rnd: * Make a raised st around next raised st, and around next dc (2 raised sts made); in next sc make dc and sc. Repeat from * around (6 sections). Continue in this manner around, making a raised st around each raised st and around each dc, and working dc and sc in each sc, until piece measures 5½ inches in diam­eter. Do not fasten off, but work center strip as follows: 1st row: * Sc in each raised st of next section, sc in dc, 2 sc in sc. Repeat from * 2 more times; sc in next st. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in each sc of previous row, sc in next dc. Ch 1, turn. 3rd, 4th and 5th rows: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Fasten off at end of 5th row.
   Make another piece same as this. Do not fasten off at end of second piece. Steam pieces lightly with hot iron through damp cloth. Place pieces together with wrong sides facing, ch 1, and, working over both thicknesses, make sc in each sc of center strip. Fasten off. With right side facing make a ridge on upper half of each circular piece (at base of center strip) by working exactly as for 1st row of center strip. Work sc back and forth along one end of center section (this is front of cap), decreasing 1 sc at end of each row until 3 sc remain—to dec, work off 2 sts as 1. Work off last 3 sts as 1. Fasten off. Work a rnd of sc all along outer edges of cap. Join and fasten off.

STRAP (Make 2) … 1st row: Ch 17. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in each sc across, ch 5, sl st in end foundation chain. Fasten off.
   Sew a strap at each side of cap about 3 inches from center back, having loop-ends free. Sew on buttons, crossing ends of straps. Turn up tab at front of cap and tack in place. Sew button on tab.
