MATERIALS:
CHADWICK'S RED HEART SWEATER WOOL, 6 balls (1 oz. balls) of a light color, 8 balls of a medium color, and 3 balls of a dark color.
Afghan Hook, Size 6.

GAUGE: 5 sts make 1 inch; 4 rows make 1 inch.

SIDE STRIP (Make 2) … With medium color, ch 33 (to measure 6½ inches). 1st row: Insert hook in 2nd ch from hook and draw up a loop, draw up a loop in each ch across, retaining all loops on hook (33 loops on hook). This is half of row, work other half as fol­lows: Yarn over and draw through 1 loop, * yarn over and draw through 2 loops. Repeat from * across. The loop which remains on hook always counts as the first st of next row. 2nd row: * Insert hook in vertical bar of next st and draw loop through. Repeat from * across to within last bar (retaining all loops on hook); insert hook through double ver­tical bar of last st and draw loop through (thus giving a firm edge to this side—33 loops on hook). Work other half of row as before. 3rd, 4th and 5th rows: Same as 2nd row. 6th row: Draw up 2 loops as before (3 loops on hook, in­cluding the loop left on hook at end of previous row), yarn over, skip the last loop made, insert hook under vertical bar directly below the previous loop on the 3rd row down, draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 1 loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops. Yarn over, insert hook under next vertical bar on 4th row down (this will be directly un­der the last loop picked up on 6th row), draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 1 loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops. Yarn over twice, insert hook under next vertical bar on 5th row down, draw up a loop, (yarn over and draw through 2 loops) twice. Yarn over, insert hook under next vertical bar on 4th row down, draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 1 loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops. Yarn over, insert hook under next vertical bar on 3rd row down and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 1 loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops. Yarn over and draw through the last 5 loops on hook, then ch 1 (thus completing a fan). Skip the next vertical bar on the 6th row (directly behind center of fan), draw up a loop in each of next 25 bars, make another fan as before, then draw up a loop in each of last 3 bars. Work other half of row as before.
   7th to 10th rows incl: Same as 2nd row. 11th row: Draw up 2 loops (3 loops on hook), make a fan, * skip vertical bar directly behind fan, draw up a loop in next 12 bars, make a fan. Repeat from * once more, then draw up a loop in each of last 3 bars. Finish row as be­fore. 12th to 15th rows incl: Same as 2nd row. 16th row: Draw up 2 loops (3 loops on hook), make a fan, skip vertical bar behind fan, draw up 8 loops, make a fan, skip vertical bar behind fan, draw up 7 loops, make a fan, skip bar behind fan, draw up 8 loops, make a fan, skip bar behind fan, draw up 3 loops. Finish row as before. 17th to 20th rows incl: Same as 2nd row. 21st row: Same as 11th row. 22nd to 31st rows incl: Repeat the 2nd to 6th rows incl twice. Repeat the 7th to 31st rows incl for pattern until there are 126 rows in all. Fasten off.

NARROW STRIP (Make 2) … With dark color, ch 7. 1st to 5th rows incl: Same as Side Strip (7 loops on each row). 6th row: Draw up 2 loops (3 loops on hook), make a fan, draw up loop in each of last 3 bars. Finish row as before. Repeat the 2nd to 6th rows incl (thus making a fan on every 5th row) until there are 126 rows in all. Fasten off.

CENTER STRIP … With light color ch 51 (to measure 10 inches). 1st to 5th rows incl: Same as Side Strip (51 loops on each row). 6th row: Draw up 2 loops (3 loops on hook), make a fan, skip vertical bar directly behind fan, draw up loop in each of next 43 bars, make a fan, draw up loop in each of last 3 bars. Finish row as before. Repeat the 2nd to 6th rows incl (thus making a fan at each end on every 5th row) until there are 126 rows in all. Fasten off.

EDGING … Place strips in proper order as in illustration and sew together neatly. Work edging along 2 short ends only as follows: With right side facing, attach dark yarn. Sc in same place, * ch 3, (yarn over, insert hook in same place and draw loop through) 5 times; yarn over and draw through all loops on hook, skip 3 sts, sc in next st. Repeat from * across. Fasten off.

MONOGRAM … Letter is first drawn on a sheet of paper. Place this paper in position so that letter will be in center of carriage cover and, with basting thread, sew over outline of letter. Tear away paper, then, using; dark color yarn, fill in outline by embroidering with cross sts. One cross st is made over each vertical bar of crocheted piece.
