Stem Glass Muff Pattern, No. 941

Materials: Clark's O.N.T. Mercerized Crochet, size 10, 1 ball of a dark color and 5 balls of a light color; or J. & P. Coats Mercerized Crochet, size 10, 1 ball of a dark color and 4 balls of a light color.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 8.

This material is sufficient for a set of 6 coasters, each 3 inches in diameter.

Lower Piece: With light color, ch 20, turn. 1st row: S c in 3rd ch from hook, s c in each ch across. Ch 2, turn. 2nd row: S c in each s c across. Ch 2, turn. Repeat 2nd row, increasing 1 st at end of each row until there are 29 s c in the row. Work straight for 6 rows. Then decrease 1 s c at end of each row until 19 s c remain. Work 1 row straight. Break off. Upper Piece: With light color, ch 21, turn. 1st row: D c in 4th ch from hook, d c in each ch across. Ch 3, turn. Hereafter, make d c in d c, increasing 1 d c at both ends of each row until there are 29 d c in the row. Work 2 rows straight. Break off. Make another piece same as this. Place these 2 pieces in position over the lower piece. Then work a row of s c all around outer edge, working through the 2 thicknesses, thus joining them. Break off. With 4 strands of dark color, work a row of large over-and-over stitches around outer edge. Break off.

Monogram. With 2 strands of dark color, work monogram about ¾ inch high and ¾ inch wide, using small groups of over-and-over stitches. (See illustration.)
