Swedish Popcorn Bedspread Pattern

Make separate sections at your leisure and join them into a bedspread of any desired size.

Approximate Size 82 inches by 102 inches.
(For a Full Double Bed Size)

To make a full size double bedspread use: 24 skeins of Ivory or White Lorraine Boilproof Crochet and Knitting Cotton, Article 50, or 36 skeins of any desired color. 1 Steel Crochet Hook, Standard Size 3.

Hexagons—Ch 6, join with a slip st into a ring. 1st round: ch 3, 19 d c in ring, join with a slip st in top st of ch 3 at beginning of round (the ch 3 will count as an additional d c, which makes 20 d c in round). 2nd round: ch 3, 1 d c in same st as ch 3 (the joining st), 1 d c in next st (always take up back thread only of sts below, so that front thread of top sts show as a ridge on right side, as shown in illustration), * 2 d c in next st, 1 d c in next st; repeat from * around, join with a slip st in top of ch 3 at beginning of round (30 sts in round). 3rd round: ch 3, 1 d c in joining st, * 1 d c in each of the next 3 sts, 2 d c in next st, ch 1, 2 d c in next st; repeat from * around, ending with 1 d c in each of 3 sts, 2 d c in last st, ch 1, 1 slip st in top of ch 3 at beginning of round (6 groups of 7 d c in round, with ch 1 between groups). 4th round: ch 3, 1 d c in joining st, 1 d c in each of the next 2 sts, 5 d c in next st, drop loop from hook, insert this in top of first d c of the 5 d c just made, then insert hook in the dropped loop and draw this through loop on hook, tighten st; this forms a popcorn stitch (which will not again be described in detail); 1 d c in each of the next 2 sts, 2 d c in next st, * ch 2, 2 d c in first d c of next group, 1 d c in each of the next 2 sts, 1 popcorn in next st, 1 d c in each of the next 2 sts, 2 d c in next st (the last d c of group); repeat from * around, ending with ch 2, 1 slip st in top of ch 3 at beginning of round. 5th round: ch 3, 1 d c in joining st, * 1 d c in each of the next 7 sts, 2 d c in next st (the last d c in group), ch 2, 2 d c in first st of next group, skipping the ch 2; continue in this way to work 2 d c in first and last st of each group, and 1 d c in each of the 7 d c between, ch 2 between each group and end round with ch 2, 1 slip st in top st of ch 3 at beginning of round. 6th round: ch 3, 1 d c in joining st, 1 d c in each of the next 2 sts, 1 popcorn in next st, 1 d c in each of the next 3 sts, 1 popcorn in next st, 1 d c in each of 2 sts, 2 d c in last d c of group, ch 3, 2 d c in first d c of next group; continue in this way around, ending with ch 3, 1 slip st in top of ch 3 at beginning of round. 7th round: ch 3, 1 d c in joining st, 1 d c in each of 11 sts to last d c of group, 2 d c in last d c, * ch 3, 2 d c in first d c of next group, 1 d c in each of 11 sts, 2 d c in last d c of group; repeat from * around, ending with ch 3, 1 slip st in top of ch 3 at beginning of round. 8th round: ch 3, 1 d c in joining st, * 1 d c in each of the next 2 sts, 1 popcorn in next st, 1 d c in each of the next 3 sts, 1 popcorn in next st, 1 d c in each of 3 sts, 1 popcorn in next st, 1 d c in each of 2 sts, 2 d c in last st of group, ch 4, 2 d c in first st of next group; repeat from * around, ending with ch 4, 1 d c in top of ch 3 at begin­ning of round. 9th round: ch 3, 1 d c in joining st, * 1 d c in each of 15 sts, 2 d c in next st (the last st of group), ch 4, 2 d c in first st of next group; repeat from * around, ending with ch 4, 1 slip st in top of ch 3 at beginning of round; fasten off.

Half Hexagons—Ch 5, join into a ring. 1st row: ch 3, 8 d c in ring. 2nd row: ch 3, turn, 1 d c in first d c (take up back thread only in this row), 2 d c in each of the next 7 sts, 1 d c in top st of turning chain (16 d c, and ch 3, in this row). 3rd row: ch 3, turn, skip first d c, * 2 d c in next d c (take up front thread of all sts in this row), 1 d c in each of the next 3 sts, 2 d c in next st, ch 1; repeat from * twice, but the last time omit ch 1; end row with 1 d c in top of turning chain. 4th row: ch 3, turn, skip first d c below, * 2 d c in next st (take up back loop in all sts), 1 d c in each of 2 sts, 1 popcorn in next st, 1 d c in each of 2 sts, 2 d c in next st, ch 2; repeat from * twice, but the last time omit ch 2; end row with 1 d c in top of turning chain in row below. 5th row: ch 3, turn, skip the first d c, * 2 d c in next st (take up front loop of all sts), 1 d c in each of the next 7 sts, 2 d c in next st, ch 2; repeat from * twice, but the last time omit ch 2 and end with 1 d c in top of turning chain. 6th row: ch 3, turn, skip first d c, * 2 d c in next d c (on back thread), 1 d c in each of the next 2 sts, 1 popcorn in next st, 1 d c in each of the next 3 sts, 1 pop­corn in next st, 1 d c in each of 2 sts, 2 d c in last st of group, ch 3; repeat from * twice, but the last time omit ch 3 and end row with 1 d c in top of turning chain. 7th row: ch 3, turn, skip first d c, * 2 d c in next st (on front thread), 1 d c in each of 11 sts, 2 d c in last st of group, ch 3; repeat from * twice, but the last time omit ch 3 and end row with 1 d c in top of turning chain. 8th row: ch 3, turn, skip the first d c, * 2 d c in next d c (on back thread), 1 d c in each of the next 2 sts, 1 popcorn in next st, 1 d c in each of the next 3 sts, 1 popcorn in next st, 1 d c in each of 3 sts, 1 popcorn in next st, 1 d c in each of 2 sts, 2 d c in last st of group, ch 4; repeat from * twice, omit the last ch 4 and end row with 1 d c in top of turning chain. 9th row: ch 3, turn, skip first d c, * 2 d c in next d c (on front thread), 1 d c in each of 15 sts, 2 d c in last d c of group, ch 4; repeat from * twice, but the last time omit ch 4 and end row with 1 d c in top of turning chain; fasten off.

Make 233 full and 14 half hexagons for a full size bedspread. Arrange hexagons as shown on chart and sew them together, taking up both threads of edge sts and leaving chains free (see illustration); use the same thread to sew with as for crocheting. Add the half hexagons at ends (see chart) and sew.

Edging—Beginning at seam just before a cor­ner, make 1 d c in seam, ch 3, 1 d c in first d c of corner hexagon, * ch 3, skip 1 st on edge, 1 d c in next st, ch 3, skip 2 sts on edge, 1 d c in next st, ch 3, skip 2 sts on edge, 1 d c in next st; repeat from * along edge; work about 16 meshes on edge of the half hexagons; moder­ate the spacing of meshes, if necessary to have edging lie flat; join with a slip st to first st of round. 2nd round: ch 4, 1 d c under ch 3 of first mesh, * ch 3, 1 d c under ch 3 of next mesh, repeat from * around, join and fasten off.

Fringe—Cut thread in pieces about 11 inches long; tie a 4-thread fringe in each mesh on 3 sides of spread (sides and foot of bed).
