Materials: Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Mercer­ized Crochet, Size 70 or 80. Milward's steel crochet hook No. 11 or 12.

Roll a tiny edge of linen and s c closely over this edge, joining last s c to first s c with a sl st. 2nd row: Ch 5, * skip 1 s c, 1 d c in next st, and repeat from * around. Finish row with sl st to 3rd ch at beginning of row. 3rd row: Sl st to middle of 1st sp, make 1 s c in same sp, ch 5, * 1 d c in next sp, ch 2, and repeat from * around. Finish row with sl st to 3rd ch at beginning of row. 4th row: Sl st to middle of 1st sp, s c in same sp, * ch 5, 1 s c in next sp, ch 5, 1 s c in next sp, ch 5, 1 s c in next sp, ch 7, skip 1 sp, 1 s c in next sp, and repeat from * around. Finish row with sl st into 1st s c.

5th row: Sl st to top of 1st loop of ch-5, 1 s c over loop, * ch 5, 1 s c over next loop, ch 5, 1 s c in next loop, ch 5, 6 s c over loop of ch-7, ch 5, 1 s c over next loop, and repeat from * around. Finish row with sl st in 1st s c. 6th row: Sl st back to top of last loop, 1 s c in next loop, * ch 5, 1 s c in next loop, ch 5, 1 s c in next loop, ch 5, 1 s c in next loop, ch 7, 1 s c in next loop, and repeat from * around. Sl st to 1st s c. 7th to 16th rows incl: Alternate 5th and 6th rows. 17th row: Sl st to top of 1st loop, 1 s c over loop, * ch 5, 1 s c in next loop, ch 5, 1 s c in next loop, ch 5, ** 1 tr over loop of ch-7, ch 5, 1 d c in top of tr just made, and repeat from ** twice, then put a 4th tr in loop of ch-7, ch 5, 1 s c in next loop and repeat from * around.
