Fan Tie-Back Pattern

Materials: J. & P. Coats Pearl Cotton, 4 balls of color 756 Brown and 1 ball of color 250 Yellow, size 8, for one pair. Milward's steel crochet hook No. 7.

With Brown, ch 31, turn. 1st row: 1 d c in 5th ch from hook, thus forming a ring, ch 7, skip 4 ch, 1 s c in next, ch 3, turn. 2nd row: 12 d c over ch-7, 2 d c in ring, ch 2, 2 d c in same place (1 group of shells), ch 3, turn. 3rd row: 2 d c in ch-2 sp, ch 2, 2 d c in same sp (1 group of shells), skip 2 d c, 1 d c in each of next 12 d c, skip 5 sts of foundation ch, sl st in next ch, ch 3, turn. 4th row: 1 d c in each of next 12 d c, shell over shell, ch 3, turn. 5th row: Shell over shell, * 1 d c in next d c, ch 2, 1 d c in next d c (1 ch-2 sp made), and repeat from * 5 more times (6 ch-2 sps in all), skip 3 sts of foundation ch, sl st in next, ch 3, turn. 6th row: * 2 d c in next ch-2 sp, ch 2, 2 d c in same sp, and repeat from * to end of row (7 ch-2 sps in all). Fasten thread, break off and attach Yellow, Ch 3, turn. 7th row: Shell over shell, * 3 d c in next ch-2 sp, ch 2, 3 d c in same sp, and repeat from * to end of row (7 ch-2 sps in all) skip 3 sts of foundation ch, sl st in next. Break off, and attach Brown. Ch 3, turn.

8th row: * 3 d c in next ch-2 sp, ch 2, 3 d c in same sp, and repeat from * ending with shell over shell (7 ch-2 sps in all). Break off. Attach Yellow. Ch 3, turn. 9th row: With Yellow, work as for 7th row. 10th row: With Brown make 9 d c in each of next 6 ch-2 sps, shell over shell, ch 3, turn. This completes one motif. Continue with the next motif as follows: 11th row: Shell over shell, ch 7, s c in 5th d c of 9-d c group, ch 3, turn. Continue motif as before from beginning of 2nd row, joining the end of the 3rd and 5th rows to the 2nd 9-d c group with a sl st, and join­ing the end of the 7th and 9th rows to the 3rd 9-d c group with a sl st. Make two strips of 4 motifs each and sew the straight ends together. If desired, cover a button form with Green, make a braid of several strands and attach a tassel.

To make tassel wind cotton 130 times over a 4½ inch cardboard. The cap is made as follows: Ch 4, join with sl st to form ring, 6 s c in ring. Make 2 s c in each st until 20 sc are made, then 1 sc in each st until 12 rnds are completed. Slip cap over top of tassel and sew to stem. Sew button and tassel to one end and make a loop for the button on the other end.
