Toppling Shell Collar Pattern #2118

Materials: Clark's O.N.T. (4 balls) or J. & P. Coats (3 balls) Mercerized Crochet, size 50, White. Milward's steel crochet hook No. 9.

Collar is made of an upper and lower frill which are made individually and then joined. Lower Frill. Ch 43, turn. 1st row: 3 d c in 4th ch from hook, ch 2, 1 d c in same st as 3 d c, * skip 2 ch, in next ch make: 4 d c, ch 2, 1 d c. Repeat from * 4 more times (6 shells). ** Ch 2, skip 2 ch, d c in next ch, and repeat from ** 7 more times (8 sps). Ch 5, turn. 2nd row: Make 1 sp over each of 7 sps of previous row, ch 2, in ch-2 sp of first shell make: 4 d c, ch 2, 1 d c. * In ch-2 sp of next shell make 4 d c, ch 2, 1 d c, and repeat from * 4 more times (6 shells). Ch 3, turn. 3rd row: 3 d c, ch 2, 1 d c in ch-2 sp of first shell, * 4 d c, ch 2, 1 d c in ch-2 sp of next shell, and repeat from * 4 more times, then ch 2, skip ch-2, d c in next d c, and make sp over sp to end of row (7 sps). Ch 5, turn. Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows alternately until collar measures 27" (or any desired length). Break off.

Upper Frill. Ch 31, turn and work as for lower frill having 4 shells (instead of 6) and 5 sps (instead of 7). Work the same number of rows as the lower frill. Break off. Joining. Place upper frill over the lower frill so that the inner edges of both pieces meet. Attach thread to end sp at the right and matching sp to sp, work 2 s c in each sp and 1 s c in each d c (working through the two pieces), working over the center 40 sps 2 s c in each sp (thus shaping collar to fit around back of neck). Break off. Fasten collar at front with a snap fastener.
