Butterfly Apron Pattern

MATERIALS REQUIRED:
DAISY Mercerized Crochet Cotton size 30.
1-ball each Med. Blue No. 29, Shd. Roses No. 23S and Sunset No. 201.
Steel crochet hook No. 13.
1-yd. Lt. Blue cotton broadcloth.

BUTTERFLYTop Wing—With Shd. Roses, ch 7, tr in 7th ch from hook, (ch 1, tr in same ch) twice. ROW 2—Ch 7, turn, holding back the last lp of each tr on hook, make 3 tr in 1st ch-1 sp, thread over and draw thru all lps on hook (Cluster made), ch 3, a 3-tr Clus­ter in next ch-1 sp, ch 3, a 3-tr Cluster in end sp, ch 2, tr in same end sp. ROW 3—Ch 7, turn, a Cluster in 1st ch-2 sp, (ch 3, a Cluster in next sp) repeated across to end sp (4 Clusters), ch 2, tr in same end sp. ROW 4—Repeat Row 3 (5 Clusters). Cut 3 inches long and pull thru lp tight. ROW 5—Turn and beginning at start of either a Blue or Green section, join Sunset in 1st sp, * (ch 4, sc in same sp, ch 4, sc in next sp) 5 times across to end sp (10 lps), ch 2, dc in same end sp. ROW 6—Ch 4, turn, sc in next lp, (ch 4, sc in next lp) repeated across to 2d lp from end, ch 2, dc in end lp. ROWS 7 thru 11—Repeat Row 6 five times with 1 less lp in each row (5 lps in final row). ROW 12—Ch 4, turn, a 3-tr Cluster in next lp, ch 4, in next lp make a Cluster, ch 7, a Cluster. Ch 4, a Cluster in next lp, tr in next (end) lp. ROW 13—Ch 4, turn, dc between 1st 2 Clusters, ch 4, in next ch-7 sp make a Cluster, ch 7, a Cluster. Ch 4, dc in next sp, tr in next (end) sp. ROW 14—Ch 1, turn, sk tr and dc, sc in next ch-4 sp, in ch-7 sp between next 2 Clusters, make (ch 5, dc) 4 times. Ch 4, sk next ch-4 sp, sl st in next dc. Cut 3 inches long and pull thru lp tight. Use right side of Row 14 as right side of wing. Make a 2d Top Wing.

Lower Wing—Repeat to * in Row 5. (Ch 4, sc in next sp) 4 times, ch 2, dc in next (end) sp. ROW 6—Ch 4, turn, sc in next lp, (ch 4, sc in next lp) twice, ch 2, dc in next (end) lp. ROW 7—Ch 4, turn, sc in next lp, ch 4, sc in next lp, ch 2, dc in next (end) lp. Cut 3 inches long and pull thru lp tight. Use right side of Row 7 as right side of wing. Make a 2d Lower Wing.

Edge—With all wings right-side-up, join Blue to starting st of a Top Wing and work sc closely around wing, work­ing over thread ends left from previous rows. Ch 2, sc in starting st of a Lower Wing and work sc closely around wing. Ch 1, sc in starting st of 2d Lower Wing, work sc around wing, and with work untwisted, make 2 dc in ch-2 be­tween Top Wing and 1st Lower Wing, sc in starting st of 2d Top Wing, work sc around wing, 2 dc in bar of 2d dc made between wings, join to 1st sc. Fas­ten off. ROW 2—Join Sunset to same sc, (ch 3, sk 1 sc, sc in next sc) repeat­ed around all wings. Join and fasten off. Lap Top Wings over Lower Wings slightly and tack tog.

Body—With Blue ch 5, 4 dc in 5th ch from hook. ROW 2—Ch 3, turn, 2 dc in each dc (8 dc). ROW 3—Ch 3, turn, dc in each dc. ROW 4—Ch 1, turn, (sk 1 dc, sc in next dc) 4 times. ROW 5—Ch 1, turn, sc in 4 sc. ROW 6—Ch 3, turn, 2 dc in each sc. ROWS 7 and 8—Repeat Rows 3 and 4. ROW 9—Ch 1, turn, sk 1 sc, sc in next 3 sc. ROW 10—Ch 1, turn, sk 1 sc, 2 sc in next sc, * ch 25, sk 7 ch, sl st in next 18 ch, * sc in same sc on head. Repeat from * to *. 2 sc in same sc on head. Fasten off. Roll Body lengthwise and sew edges tog. on back. Sew in place between wings. Make 8 Butterflies.

Cut cloth 24 inches wide by 20 inches long, rounded bottom. Place one But­terfly at center on bottom edge, then arrange 3 around each side to within 2 inches of top. Baste lightly. Edge—With Blue (ch 6, dc in 6th ch from hook) repeated to reach between 2 But­terflies. ROW 2—Ch 3, sc in 1st dc-sp, (ch 3, sc in same dc-sp, ch 3, sc in next sp) repeated across. Fasten off. ROW 3—Join Shd. Roses to 1st lp of last row, (ch 3, sc in next lp) repeated across. Fasten off. Make an edging piece for each sp between Butterflies and from last Butterfly on each side, up to top. Hem down inner edge of Edging pieces and outside edge of Butterflies. Cut cloth ¼ inch from stitching, turn edge back against crochet and hem down. Cut a band of cloth 4 x 16 inches and sew to top of apron. Cut 2 ties 4 x 30 inches. Hem 2 long sides and 1 end of each. Gather other end into ends of Band. Cut a pocket 4½ x 5½ inches with a rounded bottom edge. Sew a Butterfly across top, with a length of Edging around edge of pocket. Sew pocket in place.

Steam and press apron dry on back thru a cloth.
