MATERIALS:
J. & P. COATS CROCHET CORD, 11 balls of main color (White or Ecru), 2 balls of 1st color and 3 balls of 2nd color.

Steel Crochet Hook No. 1.

This amount of material is sufficient for a set of 4 place mats, each 12 x 16½ inches, and a runner, 12 x 33 inches, including fringe.

GAUGE: 3 shells make 3 inches; 5 rows of shells make 2 inches.

PLACE MAT (Make 4) … Starting at long edge with main color, make a chain about 25 inches long. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, * skip 4 ch, 7 tr in next ch (shell made), skip 4 ch, sc in next ch. Repeat from * across, until 13 shells have been made, ending with an sc (row should measure about 13½ inches). Cut off remaining chain. Ch 4, turn. 2nd row: 3 tr in 1st sc (half shell made), * sc in center tr of next shell, shell in next sc. Repeat from * across, ending with 4 tr in last sc (half shell made). Ch 1, turn. 3rd row: Sc in 1st tr, * shell in next sc, sc in center tr of next shell. Repeat from * across, ending with sc in top st of turning ch. Fasten off. Attach 1st color, ch 4, turn. 4th row: Same as 2nd row. Fasten off. Attach 2nd color, ch 1, turn. 5th row: Same as 3rd row. Fasten off. Attach main color, ch 4, turn. 6th row: Same as 2nd row. Ch 1, turn. 7th row: Same as 3rd row but do not fasten off. Ch 4, turn. 8th row: Same as 2nd row. 9th and 10th rows: Repeat 7th and 2nd rows. 11th row: Sc in 1st tr, (shell in next sc, sc in center tr of next shell) twice. Change color by drawing a loop of 1st color through loop on hook. Fasten off main color. Shell in next sc. Change to main color as before and fasten off 1st color. Work sc in center tr of next shell and continue in pattern across until 3 shells of main color have been completed, change to 2nd color as before and work a shell. Change to main color and make 3 shells; then make a shell of 1st color and complete row with main color. Ch 4, turn. 12th row: Half shell in 1st sc, sc in center tr of next shell, shell in next sc, sc in center tr of next shell. Change to 1st color. Fasten off main color and work 2 shells; change to main color and work 2 shells; change to 2nd color and work 2 shells; change to main color and work 2 shells; change to 1st color and work 2 shells; complete row with main color. Ch 1, turn. 13th row: (This is center row of Mat.) Sc in 1st tr, shell in next sc, sc in center tr of next shell; now make 3 shells with 1st color, 1 shell with main color, 3 shells with 2nd color, 1 shell with main color, 3 shells with 1st color and 1 shell with main color. Ch 4, turn. 14th and 15th rows: Same as 12th and 11th rows. Now work 5 rows of shells with main color, 1 row with 2nd color, 1 row with 1st color and 3 rows with main color. Fasten off.

FRINGE … Cut two 4-inch strands of main color. Double these strands forming a loop. Insert hook in a stitch at edge of Mat and pull loop through; now draw loose ends through loop and pull tightly. Make fringe closely all around. Trim fringe to measure 1½ inches.

RUNNER … With main color make a chain about 40 inches long and work as for 1st row of Place Mat until there are 29 shells on the row. Cut off remaining chain. Ch 4, turn. Now work as for Place Mat, making 7 diamonds (instead of 3) across center of Runner, alternating colors as before. Make fringe all around Runner same as on Place Mat.
