MATERIALS: J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 1 ball of White … J. & P. Coats or Clark's O.N.T. Pearl Cotton, Size 5, 1 ball of Black … Steel Crochet Hook No. 7 … A bone ring.
1st rnd: Starting at center with Black, ch 4, 15 dc in 4th ch from hook. Sl st in top st of starting chain. 2nd rnd: Ch 3, dc in same place as sl st, 2 dc in each st around (32 dc in rnd, count ing starting chain as dc). 3rd rnd: Ch 1, sc in same place as sl st, sc in next 2 dc, * tr in next dc, sc in next 3 dc. Repeat from * around, ending with tr in last sc. Drop Black, insert hook in 1st sc and draw up a loop of White. 4th rnd: With White, ch 3, dc in each st around, making 2 dc in each center sc between tr's and 2 dc in each tr (48 dc).
5th rnd: Ch 3, thread over, insert hook in next dc and draw loop through, thread over and draw through 2 loops on hook, drop White, thread Black over hook and draw through remaining 2 loops on hook; thread over hook twice, insert hook in loop formed by last tr on 3rd rnd, thread over and draw loop through, * (thread over and draw through 2 loops at a time) twice; thread over hook twice, insert hook in loop formed by next tr on 3rd rnd, thread over and draw loop through, (thread over and draw through 2 loops at a time) 3 times (a joined tr); drop Black, thread White over hook and draw through remaining 2 loops. Working over Black in order to conceal it, make dc in next 3 dc, 2 dc in next dc, dc in next 2 dc drawing a loop of Black through last 2 loops of last dc; thread over twice, insert hook in loop formed by the tr where last tr was made and draw loop through. Repeat from * around, ending with 2 dc in last dc. Join. Break off Black. Next rnd: Ch 3, dc in each st around, increasing 12 dc evenly apart—to inc a dc, make 2 dc in 1 st. Join. Repeat this last rnd until piece measures 4½ inches in diameter. Now work 1 White dc rnd as before. Join. Drop White and work 1 Black sc rnd, increasing 8 sc in the rnd. Join. Repeat the last 2 rnds alternately 2 more times. Break off. Sew on bone ring.
PADDING … Cut flannel or cotton batting slightly smaller, and lining material slightly larger, than crocheted piece. Place padding between crocheted piece and lining. Turn under edges of lining and sew to edges of crocheted piece with neat over-and-over stitches. For pot holders consisting of 2 crocheted pieces, insert padding between crochet and sew up edges.
