MATERIAL:
17 skeins Knitting Worsted (4 oz. skein) 1'grey
5 skeins Knitting Worsted (4 oz. skein) french blue
3 skeins Knitting Worsted (4 oz. skein) navy
1 aluminum afghan crochet hook 10" long No. 8 or H
GAUGE: 5 sts. = 1 inch, 9 rows = 2 inch
HEXAGON: (Make 59)
Ch. 14. 1st row: insert hook in 2nd st. from hook and draw up a loop, retain loop on hook, repeat in every ch. across row. (This is half of afghan st. row). 2nd row: yarn over hook, pull through first loop * yarn over hook, pull through 2 loops, repeat from * across row until only 1 loop is left on hook. (This finishes afghan st. row). 3rd row: y.o. (an increase), draw up a loop through the 2nd and all succeeding vertical bars to within 1 st. of end, y.o. (an increase), insert hook through both vertical bars of end st. (to give this side of work a firm edge) retaining all loops on hook. 4th row: work loops off as 2nd row. (There are now 16 loops.) Repeat 3rd and 4th row alternately, increasing 1 st. at each end until there are 44 loops. 1st decr. row: insert hook through 2nd and 3rd vertical bar and draw up a loop (a decrease), draw up a loop through 4th and all succeeding vertical bars to within 3 loops of end, insert hook through next 2 vertical bars and draw up one loop, (a decrease) insert hook through both vertical bars of end st. Next row: Work loops off as 2nd row. (There are now 42 loops.) Repeat last 2 rows alternately decreasing 1 st. at each end until there are 14 loops left. Work 1 row slip st. taking up the vertical bars of all sts., fasten off.
HALF HEXAGON: (Make 8)
Work as Hexagon until there are 44 loops. Work 1 row slip st. taking up the vertical bars of all sts., fasten off.
SMALL TRIANGLE: (Make 12)
Ch. 2. Work 3 s.c. in 2nd st. from hook, ch. 1, turn. 1st row: 1 s.c. in next st., 3 s.c. in next st. (center st.), 1 s.c. in last st. ch. 1, turn. 2nd row: 1 s.c. in each of the next 2 sts., 3 s.c. in next st. (center st), 1 s.c. in each of the next 2 sts., ch. 1, turn. 3rd row: 1 s.c. in each of the next 3 sts., 3 s.c. in next st. (center st.), 1 s.c. in each of the next 3 sts., ch. 1, turn. Continue to work this way, working 3 s.c. in center st. (incr. 2 sts. in each row) until there are 16 sts. on each side of the center st. Fasten off.
EDGING:
With navy work 1 row s.c. (taking up both loops of each st.) around each Hexagon working 2 s.c. in each corner st. Fasten off. With french blue work 2 more rows s.c. the same way. Fasten off. Work the same edging across the 3 short sides of the Half Hexagons and 2 sides of the Triangles.
FINISHING:
Sew Hexagons tog. from wrong side with an overhand stitch, taking up top thread of each st. on each edge only. Join 2 Hexagons together (the beg. side of the 1st Hexagon and the finishing side of the 2nd Hexagon) and sew. Continue in this manner until 7 Hexagons are sewn into a long strip. Start the 2nd strip with a Half Hexagon, then join 6 Hexagons and finish with a Half Hexagon. Sew this strip now to first strip. Continue to sew in this manner alternating one strip of 7 Hexagons and one strip of 6 Hexagons beginning and ending with a Half Hexagon until all 9 strips are joined. Sew a Triangle between each Hexagon on end strips as shown in picture.
BORDER:
With navy work 1 row s.c. around the entire afghan working 3 s.c. in each corner st. picking up back loop only. Work 1 more row in 1'grey and navy and 2 rows of 1'blue in same manner. Fasten off and block to size.
