Size 40 x 64 inches

MATERIAL:
8 skeins Knitting Worsted (4 oz. skein) white
5 skeins Knitting Worsted (4 oz. skein) purple
4 skeins Knitting Worsted (4 oz. skein) lavender
1 aluminum afghan crochet hook 10" long No. 6 or G

GAUGE: 5 sts. = 1 inch, 9 rows = 2 inch

AFGHAN STITCH STRIP (make 4):
     With white and No. 6 crochet hook ch. 30. 1st row: Insert needle in 2nd st. from hook and pull up a loop, retain loop on needle, repeat in every ch. across row. (This is half of afghan st. row). 2nd row: yarn over hook, pull through first loop, * yarn over hook, pull through 2 loops, repeat from * across row until only 1 loop is left on hook. (This finishes afghan st. row). 3rd row: pull up a loop through the 2nd and all succeeding vertical bars to within 1 st. of end, insert hook through both vertical bars of end st. (to give this side of work a firm edge), retaining all loops on hook. 4th row: Work sts. off as 2nd row. Repeat 3rd and 4th row alternately until piece measures 62 inch. (approx. 279 rows.) Next row: Work slip st. taking up the vertical bars of all sts. Fasten off.

SIDE BORDER:
     All rows are worked from right side. 1st row: With No. 6 crochet hook and a purple loop on hook, from right side, working along long side of white strip, work 1 s.c. in end st. of each of the first 6 rows * y.o. hook 3 times, insert hook under 6th vertical bar in next afghan st. row, draw up a loop, y.o. and through 2 loops 4 times in succession, (a long st. made), skip st. in back of long st., 1 s.c. in each of the next 6 sts., repeat from * across, end 1 s.c. in each of last 6 sts., fasten off. 2nd row: (every row from here on is worked in back loop of sts.) With a purple loop on hook * work 1 s.c. in each st. to within 1 st. of long st. of 1st row, work 1 long st. under 5th vertical bar in next row, skip st. in back of long st., 1 s.c. in next st. (long st. of previous row), work 1 long st. under 5th vertical bar in next row, repeat from * across (working always 1 long st. before and after the long st. of previous row), end 1 s.c. in each of the last 5 sts., fasten off.
     3rd row: With a purple loop on hook * work 1 s.c. in each st. to within 1 st. of long st. of 2nd row, work 1 long st. under 4th vertical bar in next row, skip st. in back of long st., 1 s.c. in each of the next 3 sts., work 1 long st. under 4th vertical bar in next row, repeat from * across (working always 1 long st. before and after the long st. of previous row, having 3 s.c. in between), end 1 s.c. in each of the last 4 sts. Fasten off.
     4th row: With a lavender loop on hook work 1 s.c. in each st. to within 1 st. of long st. of 3rd row, * work 1 long st. under 3rd vertical bar in next row, skip st. in back of long st., 1 s.c. in each of the next 5 sts., work 1 long st. under 3rd vertical bar in next row, repeat from * across, (working always 1 long st. before and after the long st. of previous row, having 5 s.c. in between and long sts. are now next to each other), end 1 s.c. in each of the last 3 sts., fasten off.
     Work Side Border on other side of white strip to correspond.

FINISHING:
     Sew strips together from wrong side with an overhand stitch, taking up top thread of each st. on each edge only.

BORDER:
     With white and No. 6 crochet hook work 1 row s.c. around the entire afghan, working 3 s.c. in each corner st. Work 1 row each in purple and lavender the same way. With lavender starting at a corner stitch, work 1 d.c., ch. 1, 5 times in same stitch (open shell). Skip 2, 1 s.c. in next st., skip 2, * an open shell in next stitch, skip 3, 1 s.c. in next stitch, skip 2 and repeat from * all around the entire afghan. (Make sure to work an open shell in each corner st.) Fasten off. Attach purple at a corner. * 1 s.c., ch. 1 in space of previous row. Repeat from * 4 times. 1 s.c. on top of s.c. of previous row. Continue to work this way around entire afghan. Fasten off. Block to size.
