Crocheted Handbag Pattern #2268

Materials: Chadwick's Red Heart Sports Yarn, 4 balls (1 oz. balls) of main color and 1 ball of a contrasting color.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 1.
A 7-inch slide fastener.

Gauge: 9 sts make 1 inch; 8 rows make 1 inch.

Starting at top, with main color ch 105 (to measure about 11½ inches), turn. 1st row: S c in 2nd ch from hook, s c in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: S c in 1st s c, insert hook in 2nd s c and bring it out through 3rd s c, * yarn over hook and draw out a loop, yarn over hook and draw through both loops. Then make an s c in same s c. Now insert hook in next s c and bring it out through the following s c. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn. 3rd row: S c in each s c across, picking up only the back loop of each s c. Ch 1, turn. These last 2 rows constitute the pattern. Repeat these 2 rows alternately until piece measures 21 inches. Break off. Fold this piece so that ridges of pattern run horizontally and sew sides. Tuck in lower corners so that bag measures 8 inches across bottom. Then sew a ¼-inch tuck, 2 inches long, along each fold of tucked-in section. Measure 2 inches down from top of bag and 2 inches from one seam, and mark with a pin. Then measure 4½ inches up from bottom of bag and 1 inch from same seam, and mark. Fold a tuck ¼ inch wide from pin mark to pin mark, and sew. Make another similar tuck on the opposite side of same seam. Then finish other side of bag to correspond.

Fringe. With 2 strands of contrasting color make a chain about 3½ inches long. Make s c in 2nd ch from hook. Pull loop, which is now on hook, out to measure about 1½ inches, thus making a long loop. Then, holding this loop on hook with forefinger of right hand so that it will not draw back, insert hook in same st, yarn over hook and draw loop through, yarn over and draw through loop just made; pull loop, which is now on hook, out 1½ inches (2 loops made in 1st st). Make 2 loops same as those just made in each ch across. Break off. Make 5 more pieces same as this. Sew fringe on both sides of bag, as in illustration. Trim Fringe evenly.

Cord. For a cord 24 inches long, measure off about ten 2-yd. lengths of a contrasting color, twist tightly, then double the twisted strands and give them a second twist in the opposite direction. Lace cord through the bag 2½ inches down from top edge. Fasten ends securely on wrong side. For handle, make a similar cord measuring off ten 1-yd. lengths of a contrasting color. Draw this cord through the previous cord, tie ends together securely, then wind a few strands of thread around the two thicknesses and fasten securely.

Sew slide fastener along opening, 2 inches down from top edge.
