Headsize 21½

Materials: Chadwick's Red Heart Knitting Worsted, 2 skeins of main color (1¼ oz. skeins), and 1 skein of contrasting color for trimming.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 1.
7 snap fasteners.

Crown: Starting at top, with main color, ch 5 and join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: Ch 3, 15 d c in ring. 2nd row: * S c in 1st d c, 2 s c in next d c. Repeat from * around. 3rd rnd: S c in each s c around. 4th and 5th rnds: * 2 s c in next s c, s c in each of next 3 s c. Repeat from * around. 6th rnd: S c in each s c around. 7th, 8th, and 9th rnds: * S c in each of 4 s c, 2 s c in next s c. Repeat from * around. 10th rnd: S c in each s c around. 11th rnd: * 2 s c in next s c, s c in each of next 10 s c. Repeat from * around. 12th to 15th rnds incl: S c in each s c around. 16th to 19th rnds incl: Same as 11th rnd. 20th rnd: S c in each s c around. Work should now measure about 19½ inches in circumference. If not, add another rnd making a few more increases or decreases, as necessary. Hereafter, work straight until work measures 6 inches from tip of crown. Break off.

With contrasting color work 2 ridges, the first ridge in 8th rnd from tip and the second ridge in 11th rnd from tip. To make a ridge, attach wool to an s c and make a d c (holding the tip of crown toward you) in each s c around. Join and break off. Work a ridge in the last rnd of crown in same way.

To trim crown, with contrasting color ch 7 and join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: Make 12 s c in ring. 2nd to 6th rnds incl: Make s c in each s c around. Break off. Sew trimming to tip of crown.

Ear Laps: With main color make a chain to measure 2 inches long. 1st row: S c in 2nd ch from hook, s c in each ch across, making 4 s c in last ch (this to be curved end). Do not turn but continue across other side of chain, making s c in each s c. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: S c in each s c, making 4 increases around the curved end of tab only, in order to keep it flat. Ch 1, turn. Repeat 2nd row until piece measures about 2½ inches long. Then work without increasing until piece measures 3 inches long. Break off. With contrasting color, work a row of d c around pieces as for lower edge of crown. Fasten each piece to hat with 3 snap fasteners.

Tie String. With main color, make a chain to measure 7 inches long, turn and work 2 rows of s c. Sew one end to one ear lap and fasten other end with a snap fastener to other ear lap.
