Hat and Bag Pattern #2347

Materials:
J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 10 balls of Hunter's Green
Bone Crochet Hook No. 6
4½ dozen paillettes
¾ yard of grosgrain ribbon, 1½ inches wide
2 yards of grosgrain ribbon, 1 inch wide
5 pieces of cardboard each 6½ inches square
¾ yard of felt or lining material

Divide thread into 4 equal parts and use 4 threads throughout.

HAT

Top Piece ... Starting at center, ch 10. 1st rnd: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across; then, working along opposite side of starting chain, make sc in each ch across. 2nd rnd: * 3 sc in next sc, sc in next 7 sc. Repeat from * once more. 3rd rnd: 2 sc in each of next 3 sc (front), sc in next 8 sc, 3 sc in next sc (back point), sc in next 8 sc. 4th rnd: 2 sc in each of next 6 sc (front), sc in each sc to center st of next 3-sc group, 3 sc in center sc (back point), sc in each remaining sc. 5th rnd: 2 sc in each of next 12 sc, sc in each sc to center st of next 3-sc group, 3 sc in center sc, sc in each remaining sc. 6th to 10th rnds incl: Sc in each sc across to center st of back point, 3 sc in center sc, sc in each remaining sc. Mark a stitch at center front with a pin. 11th rnd: Sc in each sc to center front, work 3 sc in the pin-marked stitch, sc in each remaining sc. 12th and 13th rnds: Sc in each sc to center st of 3-sc group at center front, make 3 sc in center sc, sc in each remaining sc of rnd. Sl st in next 2 sc. Break off.

Square (Make 4) … Starting at center, ch 4. Join. 1st rnd: 8 sc in ring. 2nd rnd: * 3 sc in next sc, sc in next sc. Repeat from * 3 more times. 3rd to 6th rnds incl: * Sc in each sc to center st of 3-sc group, make 3 sc in center sc. Repeat from * 3 more times; sc in each re­maining sc. Sl st in next 2 sc. Break off.

Place a corner of one Square on top of a corner of another Square, overlapping them for ½ inch. Tack this overlap to center front of Top Piece 2 inches up from center front point. Sew a corner of next Square to corner diagonally opposite overlap. Drape and tack to Top Piece as illustrated. Finish other side to corre­spond. Make a bow of wide ribbon and sew to center front. Sew 5 paillettes on each of the outer Squares and 4 on each of the inner Squares.

BAG …

Bottom ... Ch 4. Join. 1st rnd: 12 sc in ring. 2nd rnd: * 3 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc. Repeat from * 3 more times. 3rd to 12th rnds incl: * Sc in each sc to center st of next 3-sc group, make 3 sc in center sc. Repeat from * 3 more times; sc in each remaining sc. Sl st in next 2 sc. Break off.

Side Piece ... Make 4 pieces same as Bottom.

Join squares into a strip by working sc through both thicknesses. Join the two ends of strip in same way. Pin edge of Bottom to edge of Side Piece. Work sc through both thicknesses around. Attach thread in one corner at top and work sc in each sc around, keeping corners even. Work 9 rnds straight. Work mesh as follows: 1st rnd: * Ch 3, skip next sc, sc in next sc. Repeat from * around. Join with sl st in base of first ch-3. 2nd and 3rd rnds: Sl st in next 2 ch, sc in loop, * ch 3, sc in next loop. Repeat from * around. Join. 4th rnd: Sl st in next 2 ch, 2 sc in loop, * sc in next sc, 2 sc in next loop. Repeat from * around. Join and break off.

Beading ... Attach 8 threads (instead of 4) in any loop, ch 1, sc in same loop, * ch 3, sc in next loop. Repeat from * around. Join and break off.

Tack a cardboard square to wrong side of each cro­cheted square. Line bag with felt or lining material. Fold narrow ribbon in half the long way and machine stitch down the center. Cut ribbon in half. Run one piece through beading and sew ends together. Run other piece of ribbon through beading in the opposite direction and sew ends together. Sew 9 paillettes to each square of Side Piece as illustrated.
