Towel Edging & Pot Holder 1 Pattern

J. & P. COATS "KNIT-CRO-SHEEN," Art. A.64: 2 balls each of No. 1 White and No. 70 Blue Jewel.

Milwards Steel Crochet Hooks No. 3 and No. 2/0 (double zero).

A bone ring ... A blue and white kitchen towel.

Use thread double throughout.

POT HOLDER ... Starting at bottom with White and No. 3 hook, ch 32. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 8 ch, (ch 2, skip 2 ch, sc in next 9 ch) twice. Ch 1, turn. 2nd to 9th rows inch (Sc in next 9 sc, ch 2) twice; sc in next 9 sc. Ch 1, turn. 10th row: Sc in first sc, * (ch 1, skip 1 sc, sc in next sc) 4 times; ch 2, sc in next sc. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn. 11th row: Sc in first 9 sts, (ch 2, sc in next 9 sts) twice. Ch 1, turn. Repeat 2nd row 8 times. Repeat 10th and 11th rows. Now repeat 2nd row 8 more times. Break off.

Using 4 strands of Blue Jewel and No. 2/0 hook, attach thread to first bar formed by ch 2; insert hook from the front through the space above this bar, thread over and draw through loop on hook (sl st made), make a sl st around each bar across. Break off. Work another vertical stripe in same manner. Work across other sps the same way.

BORDER ... 1st rnd: With White, sc closely around, making 3 sc at each corner. Drop White. 2nd rnd: Attach Blue Jewel, ch 3 and dc in each sc around, making 3 dc in center sc at each corner. Join. Drop Blue Jewel. 3rd rnd: Pick up White and sc in each dc around, making 3 sc in center dc at each corner. Join and break off. 4th rnd: Pick up Blue Jewel and repeat 2nd rnd. Join and break off.

Make another piece the same way. With wrong sides facing and working through both thicknesses, attach White to any dc and make sc in each dc around, work­ing corners as before. Join and break off. With Blue Jewel sc closely around bone ring. Sew in place.

Towel Edging (Make 2) ... Using Blue Jewel, make a chain slightly longer than width of towel. 1st row: Dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in each ch across until row measures same as towel, being sure to have a number of sts divisible by 9 and 7 more at end of row. Break off. Cut off remaining chain. 2nd row: Attach White to top of ch-3 at beginning of previous row, sc in same place, sc in each dc across. Break off. 3rd row: Attach Blue Jewel to first sc, * ch 4, skip next sc, tr in next 3 sc, ch 4, skip next sc, sl st in next 4 sc. Repeat from * across, ending with sl st in last sc. Break off. 4th row: Attach Blue Jewel to first sc at beginning of 2nd row, * in next sp make 3 sc, ch 2 and sc; sc in next 3 tr, in next sp make sc, ch 2 and 3 sc; sc at base of next 3 sl sts. Repeat from * across, ending with sl st in last sc on 2nd row. Break off. 5th row: Attach White to first sc on 2nd row, * sl st in back loop of next 3 sc, in next ch-2 sp make sl st, ch 3 and sl st; sl st in back loop of next 5 sc, in next ch-2 sp make sl st, ch 3 and sl st; sl st in back loop of next 3 sc, skip next sc, sl st in back loop of next sc, skip next sc. Repeat from * across, ending with sl st in last sc on 2nd row. Break off. Sew to towel.
