Chevron Pot Holder Pattern

COATS & CLARK'S O.N.T. "SPEED-CRO-SHEEN" MERCERIZED COTTON, Art. C.44: 1 ball each of No. 1 White, No. 126 Spanish Red and No. 131 Fudge Brown.

Milwards Steel Crochet Hook No. 2/0 (double zero).
A bone ring.

Starting at bottom with Fudge Brown, ch 40 to meas­ure 9 inches. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, * half dc in next ch, dc in next ch, tr in next ch, dc in next ch, half dc in next ch, sc in next 3 ch. Repeat from * across, ending with sc in last ch (5 chevrons made). Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Picking up front loop only of each st, sc in next 3 sts, * 3 sc in next tr, sc in next 2 sts, dec 2 sc—to dec 2 sc, work off 3 sc as 1 sc—sc in next 2 sts. Repeat from * across, ending with sc in last 3 sts. Drop loop from hook (do not turn). 3rd row: Picking up back loop only of each sc, attach White at beginning of previous row, dec 1 sc—to dec 1 sc, work off 2 sc as 1 sc—* sc in next 2 sts, 3 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc, dec 2 sc. Repeat from * across, decreasing 1 sc at end of row. Insert hook in dropped loop on previous row, draw loop through last loop on hook (thus changing color), always change colors in this man­ner. Ch 1, turn. 4th row: Picking up front loop only of each sc, dec 1 sc, * sc in next 2 sc, 3 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc, dec 2 sc. Repeat from * across, dec 1 sc at end of row. Drop loop from hook, do not turn. 5th row: Pick up White at beginning of previous row. Working in front loop only of each sc, continue in pattern as established. Change color. Ch 1, turn. 6th row: Picking up back loop only of each sc, continue in pattern across. Drop loop. 7th row: Pick up White at beginning of previous row. Working in back loop only of each sc, continue in pattern across. Change color. Ch 1. turn. Repeat 4th to 7th rows incl until piece measures 5½ inches, ending with 6th row, do not drop loop. Ch 4, turn. Last row: Picking up front loop only of each sc, skip first sc, tr in next sc, * dc in next sc, half dc in next sc, sc in next sc, half dc in next sc, dc in next sc, holding back on hook the last loop of each tr, make tr in next 3 sc, thread over, draw through all loops on hook (cluster made). Repeat from * across to within last 2 sc, make a 2-tr cluster over the last 2 sc. Break off all threads.

TRIMMING ... Thread a 20-inch length of Spanish Red into a needle. Embroider overcast sts in each sc on first White row, working under free loop of each sc across. Fasten ends securely. On second White row, overcast each sc, working over free loop of each sc across. Continue in this manner, alternating overcast sts until all White rows have been worked. Fasten all ends securely on wrong side.

SIDE BORDER ... 1st row: Attach Brown to first free st on one short side, sc closely across side. Break off. 2nd row: Attach Brown at beginning of previous row, sc in each sc across. Break off. Complete other short side in same manner.

Make another piece the same way. With wrong sides facing and working through both thicknesses, sc closely around entire pot holder, making 3 sc in each corner Join and break off. With Brown sc closely around bone ring. Sew in place.
