Materials: Clark's O.N.T. (15 balls) or J. & P. Coats (11 balls) Mercerized Crochet, size 50, White or Ecru.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 10.
This material is sufficient for 4 place mats, each about 11 x 17 inches, and a center mat about 14 x 25 inches. Motifs measure about 2¾ inches in diameter. They are made individually, then sewed together.
Motif. Starting at center, ch 9, join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: Ch 3 (to count as d c), 23 d c in ring. Join with sl st to 3rd st of ch-3 first made. 2nd rnd: Ch 3, d c in next d c, * ch 3, skip next d c, d c in each of next 2 d c. Repeat from * around. Join last ch-3 with sl st to 3rd st of ch-3 first made. 3rd rnd: Ch 3, 2 d c in next d c, * ch 5, d c in next d c, 2 d c in next d c. Repeat from * around, joining last ch-5 with sl st to 3rd st of ch-3 first made. 4th rnd: Ch 3, * 2 d c in next d c, d c in next d c, ch 6, d c in 1st d c of next d c-group. Repeat from * around. Join with sl st as before. 5th rnd: Ch 3, * 2 d c in each of next 3 d c, ch 7, d c in 1st d c of next d c-group. Repeat from * around (7 d c in each d c-group). Join as before. 6th rnd: Ch 3, d c in each of next 3 d c, * ch 2, d c in same place as d c just made, d c in each of next 3 d c, ch 8, d c in each of next 4 d c. Repeat from * around. Join as before. 7th rnd: Sl st in each st to within ch-2 sp, sl st in sp, ch 6 (to count as d tr and ch-1), work 6 d tr in ch-2 sp with ch-1 between each d tr, * ch 4, s c in next ch-8 loop, ch 4, 7 d tr in next ch-2 sp with ch-1 between each d tr. Repeat from * around. Join last ch-4 with sl st to 5th st of ch-6 first made.
8th rnd: Sl st in next ch-1 sp, * ch 3, s c in next sp. Repeat from * 4 more times, then ch 3, s c in next ch-4 loop, ch 3, s c in next s c, ch 3, s c in next ch-4 loop, ch 3, s c in next ch-1 sp, and repeat thus around. Join and break off. This completes one motif. Make 24 motifs.
To Join Motifs: Place motifs in position (4 x 6 motifs). With over-and-over stitches, sew the 2 ch-3 loops of one motif (those directly over the 2nd and 3rd d tr) to the corresponding 2 ch-3 loops of the adjacent motif (always having right side of work on top). See stitch detail. Then fill in spaces between motifs as follows: Fill-in-lace. Starting at center, ch 9, join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: Ch 3 (to count as d c), 23 d c in ring. Join with sl st. 2nd rnd: Ch 8, sl st to one motif in 3rd loop (counting from right to left of a joining), * ch 8, s c in each of next 3 d c back on fill-in-lace, ch 8, skip next 4 ch-3 loops of same motif, sl st in next loop, ch 8, s c in each of next 3 d c back on fill-in-lace ch 8, sl st in 3rd ch-3 loop on next motif. Repeat from * around. Join and break off.
Center Mat. Work exactly as for place mats, but having 5 x 9 motifs.
If desired, starch slightly and press.
