MATERIALS—Lily Mercrochet Cotton size 30:—Large Balls—3-balls Shd. Pinks and 2-balls each Shd. Greens and Bright Nile Green. Small Balls—1-ball each Gray and Dk. Yellow. Sufficient for Centerpiece, 4 Place Mats and 4 Glass Doilies. Crochet hook size 13. Linen or Indian Head in Green.

DESERT ROSE—In Shd. Pinks, ch 8, sl st in 1st st, ch 3, 19 dc in ring, sl st in top of ch-3. Petal—* Ch 3, 3 dc in same st, (3 dc in one lp of next dc) twice. Ch 3, turn, 2 dc in last dc, dc in next 7 dc, 2 dc in end dc. Ch 3, turn, 2 dc in last dc, dc in next 9 dc, 2 dc in end dc. Ch 1, turn, hdc in last dc, 2 dc in next, (tr in next, 2 tr in next) 4 times, tr in next st, 2 dc in next, hdc in end dc. Ch 1, turn, sc in hdc, hdc in next st, 2 dc in next, dc in 5 dc, 2 dc in next dc, (dc, ch 2, sc, ch 2, dc) all in next dc, 2 dc in next, dc in 5 dc, 2 dc in next st, hdc in next, sl st in end st, (ch 2, sc between next 2 rows) 3 times, ch 2, sl st in one lp of next 2 dc on ring. Repeat from * 4 times. Cut 6" long, thread to a needle and fasten off on back. Stamens—In Gray, (ch 9, sl st in starting st of this ch-9) 15 times, join, cut 8" long and sew around center ring. In Yellow, * ch 9, sl st in 1st st, (ch 8, sl st in same st) 4 times. Repeat from * 5 times. Sl st at base of 1st 5 groups, drawn tight, forming a coil. Sew in center of flower.

LEAF SPRAY—In Shd. Green, ch 25, sk last st, sc in 24 ch. Ch 1, turn and working in back lps only, make sc in last sc, * hdc in next, dc in 2 sc, tr in 3 sc, dtr in 10 sc, tr in 3 sc, dc in 2 sc, hdc in next sc, * (2 sc, ch 3, 1 sc) all in end sc. Working back on other side of 1st row, sc in 1st st and repeat from * to *. Sc in next st, sl st in 1st sc on other side, ch 25, sk last ch, sc in remaining ch, sl st in end of leaf. Cut 6" long and fasten off. Make 2 more leaves without stems. Tack on either side of main stem.

SCROLL—In Nile Green, ch 136 tightly to measure 8". Sk last st, sc in next, hdc in next, 2 hdc in next, (dc in 5 ch, 2 dc in next ch) 7 times, dc in each remaining ch. Cut and fasten off.

PLACE MAT—Cut cloth 12 x 18 inches. Make 8 Roses, 6 Leaf Sprays and 12 Scrolls. Following illustration, baste 3 Roses, 3 Leaf Sprays and 2 Scrolls on one end. Add 2 Scrolls around one corner and up side to a Rose on center of long side. Lay a piece of glass over this and mark around motifs on tracing or tissue paper. By tracing from this 1st corner, make a pattern for entire doily. Lay tissue paper over this pattern and trace one for each doily. Pin on cloth, baste motifs lightly thru both paper and cloth, first cutting out centers of roses and leaves in the paper to make removal easier. Sew half of Scrolls right-side-up, other half wrong-side-up. Tear away paper and hem down motifs closely. Around edge hem down inner edge of Scrolls only, leaving outer edge of all motifs around edge of doily free so cloth can be turned back under motifs. Cut cloth just outside motifs, turn edge back twice and hem down on back of motifs.

CENTERPIECE—Cut cloth 12 x 22 inches. Make 12 Roses, 6 Leaf Sprays and 12 Scrolls. Arrange motifs as for Place Mat except put 3 Roses along center of each long side.

GLASS DOILY—Cut a 5½ inch circle of cloth. Arrange one Rose, one Leaf Spray and 2 Scrolls around edge and finish as for Place Mat.

Stretch and pin doilies right-side-down. Steam and press dry thru a cloth.
