MATERIALS—Lily Mercrochet Cotton size 20:—11-balls White, 1-ball each Dk. Blue and Bright Nile Green, and 3-balls Blue. Sufficient for Centerpiece and 4 Place Mats. Crochet hook size 13.

PLACE MAT—In White, ch 190, sk last 4 ch, dc in 186 ch. ROW 2—Ch 5, turn, sk last dc, tr in next 73 dc, * ch 6, sk 4 dc, sc in next dc, ch 3, turn, 6 dc on ch-6, ch 3, turn, dc in 6 dc, sk next 4 dc on last row, tr in next dc. Repeat from * 3 times. Tr in 73 sts to end of row. ROW 3—Ch 5, turn, sk last tr, tr in next 73 tr, (ch 5, sk 5 dc on next square, sc in next dc, ch 5, tr down in next tr) 4 times, 73 tr across to end ch-5. Work the solid-tr corners very tightly for best effect. ROW 4—Ch 5, turn, sk last tr, tr in each tr across solid corner to within 11th tr from end (10 less tr than last row), * ch 6, sk 4 tr, sc in next tr, ch 3, turn, 6 dc on ch-6, ch 3, turn, dc in 6 dc, sk 4 tr, tr in next (end) tr on corner, (ch 6, sc in next sc, ch 3, turn, 6 dc on ch-6, ch 3, turn, dc in 6 dc, tr in next tr) repeated across to first tr on solid corner. Ch 6, sk 4 tr, sc in next tr, ch 3, turn, 6 dc on ch-6, ch 3, turn, dc in 6 dc, sk 4 tr, tr in next tr, tr in each remaining tr across corner to end ch-5. ROW 5—Ch 5, turn, sk last tr, tr in each remaining tr across solid corner, * (ch 5, sk 5 dc on next square, sc in next dc, ch 5, tr in next tr) repeated across squares, tr in each tr across corner to end ch-5. Repeat Rows 4 and 5 five times. ROW 16—Ch 5, turn, sk last tr, tr in next 3 tr, * ch 6, sk 4 tr, sc in next tr, ch 3, turn, 6 dc on ch-6, ch 3, turn, dc in 6 dc, sk 4 tr, tr in next tr, * (ch 6, sc in next sc, ch 3, turn, 6 dc on ch-6, ch 3, turn, dc in 6 dc, tr in next tr) 16 times. Repeat from * to *. Tr in remaining 3 sts. ROW 17—Ch 5, turn, sk last tr, tr in next 3 tr, * (ch 5, sk 5 dc on next square, sc in next dc, ch 5, tr down in next tr) * repeated across, ending with 4 tr. ROW 18—Ch 5, turn, sk last tr, tr in next 3 tr, * (ch 6, sc in next sc, ch 3, turn, 6 dc on ch-6, ch 3, turn, dc in 6 dc, tr down in next tr) * repeated across, ending with 4 tr. Repeat Rows 17 and 18 thru 21 pattern rows of squares, ending with Row 17. End—ROW 44—Ch 5, turn, sk last tr, tr in next 3 tr, (4 tr in next sp, tr in next st) twice. Repeat from * to * in Row 18 sixteen times. Tr in remaining 13 sts. ROW 45—Ch 5, turn, sk last tr, tr in next 13 tr. Repeat from * to * in Row 17 across, ending with 14 tr. ROW 46—Ch 5, turn, sk last tr, tr in each remaining tr across solid corner, (4 tr in next sp, tr in next st) twice. Repeat Row 18 from * to * across, making one less pattern square at end (as at start) than in last pattern row, (4 tr in next sp, tr in next st) twice, tr in each remaining st. ROW 47—Ch 5, turn, sk last tr, tr in each remaining tr across to 1st pattern square. Repeat Row 17 from * to * across pattern squares, tr in each tr across to end ch-5. Repeat Rows 46 and 47 to match starting end (a total of 28 pattern squares). FINAL ROW—Ch 3, turn, sk last tr, dc in each tr across, 4 dc in each sp, dc in each tr and sc across. EDGE—Ch 1, turn, sc in last dc, ch 5, sc in 4th ch from hook for a p, ch 2, sc in same dc, (ch 5, p, ch 2, sk 2 dc, sc in next dc, (ch 5, p, ch 2, sk 4 dc, sc in next dc) repeated across to corner. Ch 5, p, ch 2, sc in corner, (ch 5, p, ch 2, sc between next 2 rows) repeated across long side. Continue around in same way with an extra loop at each corner. Fasten off.

CORNFLOWER—In Blue, ch 10, sl st in 1st ch, ch 3, 17 dc in ring, sl st in top of ch-3. * Ch 11, sl st in 11th ch from hook, (ch 10, sl st in same st) 3 times, sc in next dc. Repeat from * 17 times. Cut 6" long, thread to a needle and fasten off on back. Center—In Dk. Blue, * ch 11, sl st in 11th ch from hook, (ch 10, sl st in same st) 3 times. Repeat from * 3 times. Sl st at base of 1st group. Cut 8" long and use to tack Center in flower.

LEAVES FOR LEFT TOP CORNER—1st Leaf—Starting at left side, in Green ch 36, sk last ch and working tightly, make 4 sc, 4 hdc, 20 dc, 3 hdc, 3 sc and 1 sl st on ch. Fasten off. Use wrong-side-up. 2d Leaf and Stem—Ch 21, sk last ch, 15 sc and 1 sl st on ch, * ch 25, sk last ch, 3 sc, 3 hdc, 12 dc, 2 hdc and 4 sc on ch, * 3 sc and 1 sl st in stem ch. Fasten off. Use right-side-up. 2d Spray—Ch 18, sk last ch, 3 sc, 3 hdc, 4 dc, 2 hdc, 2 sc and 1 sl st on ch. Ch 33, sk last ch and make sc to end of ch. Ch 20, sk last ch, 3 sc, 3 hdc, 8 dc, 2 hdc, 2 sc and 1 sl st on ch. Fasten off. Use right-side-up. 3d Spray—1st Leaf—Repeat 2d Leaf from * to *. Use wrong-side-up. Next Leaf and Stem—Ch 40, sk last ch, 4 sc, 4 hdc, 18 dc, 2 hdc, 1 sc and 1 sl st on ch. Ch 16, sk last ch and make sc to end of ch. Fasten off. Use right-side-up.

Tack 3 flowers on corner, arrange leaves and stems in order and hem down closely. Repeat on lower right corner. For other 2 corners reverse all leaves and stems.

CENTERPIECE—Make center section 12 pattern squares longer before starting final END. Repeat END for a total of 40 pattern squares. Repeat Final Row of dc, make Edge around. Make flowers and leaves for each corner.

Stretch and pin doilies right-side-down in true shape on a padded board. Steam and press dry thru a cloth.
