COATS & CLARK'S O.N.T. "SPEED-CRO-SHEEN" MERCERIZED COTTON, Art. C.44: 1 ball each of No. 61-D Nu-Ecru and No. 122 Watermelon; and
J. & P. COATS METALLIC "KNIT-CRO-SHEEN," Art. A.64-M: 1 ball of No. M.122 Watermelon.
Milwards Steel Crochet Hook No. 2/0 (double zero).

GAUGE: 5 half dc make 1 inch; 3 rows make 1 inch.

SIDE (Make 2) … Starting at one narrow end, with one strand each of Watermelon "Speed-Cro-Sheen" and "Knit-Cro-Sheen" Metallic, ch 22. 1st row: Half dc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across. Drop both strands of Watermelon. Attach Nu-Ecru, ch 2, turn. 2nd row: Picking up back loop only, half dc in each st across. Drop Nu-Ecru. Do not turn. 3rd row: Pick up both strands of Watermelon at beginning of 2nd row, ch 2, work across as for 2nd row. Drop both strands. Pick up Nu-Ecru. Ch 2, turn. The 2nd and 3rd rows constitute the pattern. Work in pattern for 9 inches, ending with 3rd row. Break off all threads.

LOWER BAND … Attach both strands of Watermelon to corner on long edge of one Side. 1st rnd: Sl st closely along long edge, then continue across the long edge of second Side, sl st in first st to join. 2nd rnd: Ch 2, picking up back loop only, half dc in each sl st around. Join. 3rd rnd: Picking up back loop only, sl st in each half dc around. Join and break off.

TOP … Attach both strands of Watermelon to corner on opposite long edge of one Side. 1st row: Make 39 sl sts along long edge, then continue across other Side, making 38 sl sts along long edge (77 sts). Break off and attach both strands at beginning of row, ch 2. Note: Hereafter, pick up back loop only of each st. 2nd row: Half dc in each sl st across. Break off and attach at beginning of row as before. Work is now done in rnds. 1st rnd: Ch 2, * half dc in next 5 half dc, work off next 2 half dc as 1 half dc (1 st decreased). Repeat from * around. Join. 2nd and 3rd rnds: Repeat first rnd (49 sts remain at end of 3rd rnd). 4th, 5th and 6th rnds: Work as for first rnd, having 1 half dc less between decreases on each rnd (25 sts remain at end of 6th rnd). 7th rnd: Ch 1, * sc in next st, work off 2 sc as 1 sc. Repeat from * around. Join. 8th and 9th rnds: Ch 1, sc in each sc around. Join. 10th rnd: Repeat 7th rnd. 11th rnd: Ch 1, work off 2 sc as 1 sc around. Break off, leaving a long end of both strands for sewing. Sew last rnd together.
