Square Top Hat Pattern #33

Materials: Clark's O.N.T. Knitting and Crochet Cotton, 1 ball 68 Skipper Blue and 1 ball 84 Beige; or 2 balls of each color of J. & P. Coats Crochet Cord. Milward's steel crochet hook No. 3.

   Thread is used double throughout—1 strand of Skipper Blue and 1 of Beige.

   To begin, ch 4, join with sl st to form ring, ch 1. 1st row: 6 s c in ring, 2 s c in ch-1 with ch-1 between. 2nd row: * S c in next s c, 2 s c in next s c with ch-1 between (this is an increase). Repeat from * 3 more times. 3rd row: * S c in each of next 2 s c, 2 s c in next ch-1 with ch-1 between. Repeat from * 3 more times. 4th to 17th rows incl: Make s c in each s c, and increase directly over increases of previous rows. There are 4 increases to the rows, spaced evenly. After completing square, do not break off. Ch 1, turn. 18th row: Skip s c (this is a decrease), s c in each s c along only 2 sides of the square. Do not make increases at corner. Ch 1, turn. 19th row: Skip s c, s c in each s c across. In order to decrease at end of row, do not make an s c in the ch-1. Ch 1, turn. 20th to 38th rows incl: Repeat 18th and 19th rows alternately, decreasing at beginning and at each end of row. Do not break off. 39th row: Continue making s c across where decreases were made, spacing them evenly, then make s c in each s c along the other two sides of the square (do not increase at corners), then across the other side where decreases were made, then s c in each s c across back. 40th to 46th rows incl: S c in each sc. 47th to 50th rows incl: The point directly opposite the center back point comes over the right eye. S c in each s c, decreasing 1 s c in each row at this point. Do not make your decreases directly over one another. Break off.

Ridge. Use Beige double. Hold the square of the hat toward you and make a row of s c over all four sides.
