Requirements:
4 ounces of 4-ply Knitting Worsted
One Afghan Stitch Crochet Hook: No. H or No. 6, 10 or 12 inch length

PATTERN: Row 1: Pick up one loop in each stitch, leaving loops on hook, then yarn over hook and through one loop, * yarn over hook and draw thru 2 loops; repeat from * across.

Row 2: Pick up one loop in each upright stitch, then take loops off as in Row 1.

Row 3: (star stitch) Chain 2, pick up 1 loop in 2nd chain from hook, and in 1st, 2nd and 3rd upright Afghan stitches (5 loops on hook), then yarn over hook and draw thru all loops, chain 1 stitch to form eye of star (first star stitch), * pick up 1 loop in eye of star, pick up 1 loop in back of star, pick up 1 loop in each of the next 2 upright Afghan stitches, (5 loops on hook), yarn over and draw thru all loops, chain 1; repeat from * across.

Row 4: Chain 2, turn, skip first eye of star stitch. Work 2 half double crochet in eye of each remaining star across row, ending with 1 half dc in 2nd chain at star of previous row. Ch 1, turn. (Be careful and have the same amount of stitches as for the plain afghan stitch). Repeat these 4 rows for the pattern. (2 rows of afghan stitch and 2 rows for the star stitch).

BONNET: Chain 71 sts, loosely, and work in the pattern until 4 star pattern rows have been completed. Work 2 rows more of Afghan stitch. Ch 1. Next row: Slip stitch over 26 sts, chain 2, work 9 stars across center of hat. Work in the pattern until 3 star pattern rows have been completed. Then decrease 1 st at each side. You will have 8 stars on the next star pattern row. Decrease 1 st at each side. (7 stars on next star pattern row). Work 2 rows of Afghan stitch. Ch 1, slip st across row. Break yarn. Sew seams at each side of hat.

FINISHING: Neck Band: Work 2 rows of Afghan stitch across bottom of hat, holding in to measure about 10½ inches or as necessary. Work the 3rd and 4th rows of pattern. Ch 1, turn; make 1 sc in top of each stitch across row. Working along front edge of hat, make 1 row of sc, taking in if necessary to fit head. Break thread and fasten off.

CORD: Using the yarn double, make a crochet chain 42 inches long. Draw thru the star stitch row at bottom of hat. Trim ends with pompoms.
