AFGHAN STITCH STRIPS—With tan A ch 20. 1st row: draw up a loop in 2nd st from hook; retaining loops on hook, draw up a loop in each st of chain (20 loops on hook). This is half of afghan-stitch row; work off loops as follows: yarn over and through end loop, * over and through 2 loops, repeat from * until only 1 loop remains. 2nd row: * draw up a loop in the vertical bar of next st and retain loop on hook; repeat from * to end, again having 20 loops on hook; work off loops as directed for 1st row. Repeat 2nd row until there are 5 rows from beginning. 6th row (1st row of popcorn pattern): draw up a loop in each of the 20 bars as before, then work off in popcorn pattern as follows: work off the first 10 loops as usual, ch 4, yarn over and through both the chain loop and the next afghan-stitch loop on hook (the ch 4 will form a popcorn on right side of work); work off remaining 9 sts. 7th row: draw up a loop in each bar of row below as before (keeping the popcorn on right side of work); work off the first 9 sts, ch 4 for a popcorn, work off the next 2 sts, ch 4 for a second popcorn, work off to end of row. Always draw up 20 loops as in regular afghan stitch, in every row; this will not be mentioned again. 8th row: work off the first 8 sts, make 1 popcorn, work off 2 sts, 1 popcorn, work off 2 sts, 1 popcorn, work off to end of row. 9th row: work off 7 sts, 1 popcorn; * work off 2 sts, 1 popcorn, repeat from * twice; work off to end of row. 10th row: work off 6 sts, 1 popcorn; * work off 2 sts, 1 popcorn; repeat from * 3 times; work off to end of row. 11th row: same as 9th row. 12th row: same as 8th row. 13th row: same as 7th row. 14th row: same as 6th row. The last 9 rows complete the diamond popcorn pattern. Work 7 rows in plain afghan stitch. Repeat from 6th row until there are 16 diamond patterns; work 5 plain afghan-stitch rows after the 16th diamond pattern; end strip with a row of slip sts (slip stitch: draw up a loop in next vertical bar and draw the loop also through st on hook); fasten off.

Make 5 of these strips.

SHADED PATTERN AT SIDES OF STRIPS— The shaded pattern is worked lengthwise.

1st row: with brown E work 1 s c on end of 1st row of afghan strip, 1 s c on end st of each of the next 2 rows, * yarn twice over hook, insert hook under bar of the 4th st in next row and work a treble, skip row in back of the treble and work 1 s c in each of the next 3 rows on edge; repeat from * alongside of strip, ending with 1 s c in each of the last 3 rows of strip; fasten off. All the rows on sides of strips are worked from same side; this will not be mentioned again.

2nd row: with same shade, work 1 s c in each of the first 4 sts of 1st row, taking up only back thread of the top sts, * work a treble on the bar of 3rd st of next afghan-stitch row, skip the st in back of the treble and work 1 s c on back thread of each of the next 3 sts in last row; repeat from * along strip, ending row with 1 s c on back thread of each of the last 2 sts; fasten off.

3rd row: with same shade, work s c on back thread of each of the first 5 sts, * a treble on the bar of 2nd st of next afghan-stitch row, skip the st in back of treble, 1 s c on back thread of each of the next 3 sts; repeat from * along strip, ending with 1 s c on back thread of last st of row below; fasten off.

4th row: with brown D work 1 s c on back thread of each of the first 2 sts, * a treble on bar of first st of next afghan-stitch row, skip the st in back of treble, 1 s c on back thread of each of the next 3 sts; repeat from *, ending row with 1 s c on back thread of each of the last 4 sts; fasten off.

5th row: with same shade, work 1 s c on back thread of each of the first 3 sts, * work a treble on free thread above first treble in 1st row of shaded pattern, skip the st in back of treble, 1 s c on back thread of each of the next 3 sts; repeat from * to end of row.

6th row: with same shade, work 1 s c on back thread of each of the first 4 sts, * a treble on free thread of next treble in 2nd row, skip the st in back of treble, work 1 s c on back thread of each of the next 3 sts; repeat from *, ending row with 1 s c on back thread of each of the last 2 sts; fasten off.

7th row: with tan C work 1 s c on back thread of first st, a treble on free thread of 2nd st of 3rd row, skip the st in back of treble, 1 s c in each of the next 3 sts; continue in pattern, ending row with 1 s c on back thread of last st; fasten off.

8th row: with same shade, work 1 s c on back thread of each of the first 2 sts, a treble on free thread of first treble in 4th row, skip the st in back of treble, 1 s c on back thread of each of the next 3 sts, a treble on free thread of next treble in 4th row; continue in pattern ending row with 1 s c on back thread of each of the last 4 sts; fasten off.

9th row: with same shade, work 1 s c on back thread of each of the first 3 sts, a treble on free thread of first treble in 5th row, skip the s c back of treble, 1 s c on back thread of the next 3 sts; continue in pattern to end of row, fasten off.

10th row: with tan B, work 1 s c on back thread of each of the first 4 sts, a treble on free thread of treble in 6th row, skip the s c back of treble, 1 s c on back thread of each of the next 3 sts; continue in pattern to end of row; fasten off.

11th row: with same shade, work 1 s c on back thread of first st, a treble on free thread of first treble in 7th row, skip the s c back of treble, 1 s c on back thread of each of the next 3 sts, a treble on free thread of next treble in 7th row; continue in pattern to end of row and fasten off.

This completes the shaded pattern on one side of afghan strip; work same pattern on other side of strip, as follows:

1st row: same as 1st row on other side of strip. 2nd row: with same shade, work 1 s c on back thread of each of the first 2 sts, a treble on bar of 3rd st in next afghan-stitch row, skip the st back of treble, 1 s c on back thread of each of the next 3 sts; continue in this way to end of row, thus working the trebles before the trebles below, instead of after, as on other side of strip. Continue to work rows in same colors and pattern as on other side, sloping the pattern in opposite direction; fasten off at end of every row and darn in all ends. Crochet 11 rows of shaded pattern in same way on both sides of the remaining 4 afghan-stitch strips.

CRISS-CROSS JOINING—Lay 2 strips side by side, with the shaded pattern sloping in same direction on both strips (see illustration). Beginning at lower end, fasten brown E in first st on right-hand strip and draw up a loop, skip the first st on left-hand strip; * insert the hook downward, from left to right in next st of left-hand strip, keeping the yarn underneath the work, draw up a loop through st and also through loop on hook (a slip st); skip 1 st on right-hand strip, insert hook downward from right to left in next st and work a slip st as before, skip 1 st on left-hand strip; repeat from * to end of strips and fasten off.

Join all strips in same way. See illustration.

BORDER—With brown E and working from right side of afghan, work a row of s c around all 4 sides, spacing sts so that edge will lie flat and working 3 s c in 1 st at the 4 corners; join with a slip st in first s c of round and fasten off. 2nd round: with same shade and working from same side, work 4 d c in a corner st, * ch 1, skip 3 sts, a group of 4 d c in next st; repeat from * to next corner, spacing pattern so that a group of 4 d c will be in corner st; continue in this way around, working all corners alike, join and fasten off. 3rd round: with brown D and working from same side as before, work a group of 4 d c in 3rd st of corner group, ch 1, a group of 4 d c in next space; ch 1 and a group of 4 d c in each space to next corner, a group of 4 d c in 3rd st of corner group; continue in this way around, working all corners alike; join and fasten off. 4th round: with tan C work as in 3rd round. 5th round: with tan B and working from same side, work 2 d c in 3rd st of a corner group, ch 1, 2 more d c in same st, * ch 1, work a group of 2 d c, ch 1, 2 d c,—all in next space; repeat from * to next corner, work this corner same as first; continue in this way to end of round, working all corners alike; join and fasten off. 6th round: with tan A work 2 s c under ch 1 in a corner space, ch 1, 2 more s c in same space, * 1 s c in next space, a group of 2 s c, ch 1, 2 s c,—all in follow-ing space; repeat from * around, join and fasten off.
