Afghan measures 49 x 73 inches … Motifs measure 12 inches square, including edging.
GAUGE: 4 sts = 1 inch; 3 rows = 1 inch.
ROSE MOTIF (Make 12) … With Surf Green, ch 42 to measure 11 inches. Work in afghan stitch for 31 rows. Do not break off.
Edging: 1st rnd: Ch 1, 3 sc in first vertical bar, sc in each vertical bar across to next corner, 3 sc in last vertical bar, * inserting hook in vertical bar of next row and the st directly behind the bar, make an sc. Repeat from * across to next corner, 3 sc in corner; working along opposite side of starting chain, make sc in each ch to next corner, 3 sc in corner, sc along remaining edge as before. Join with sl st to first sc. Break off and fasten. 2nd rnd: Attach Field Green to center sc of any corner, ch 1, * in center sc make sc, dc and sc, sc in each sc to within center sc of next corner. Repeat from * around. Join, break off and fasten. Block to measure 12 x 12 inches.
EMBROIDERY … Run a basting thread between first and 2nd rows of vertical bars—lower edge of motif. Starting with the 2nd row of vertical bars, count off 28 rows; run another basting thread between 28th and 29th rows—top edge of motif. Run basting threads along both side edges, having 34 vertical bars centrally placed between. Examine diagram for making cross sts over afghan st. Following chart, embroider design, working colors as indicated by symbols.
TEXTURED MOTIF (Make 12) … With Surf Green, work as for Rose Motif until the first row has been completed. 2nd row—First Half of Row: Retaining all loops on hook, * bring yarn forward and hold in front of work, insert hook through next vertical bar and draw loop through—afghan purl st made (Fig. above); draw up a loop in next vertical bar. Repeat from * across to last vertical bar; insert hook through last vertical bar and the st directly behind it and draw up a loop. There are same number of loops as on first row. Second Half of Row: Same as previous row. 3rd row: Retaining all loops on hook, * draw up a loop in 2nd vertical bar, make a p st in next vertical bar. Repeat from * across, ending same as First Half of last row. Complete Second Half of Row as for previous row. Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows for pattern until 31 rows in all have been completed. Work edging same as for Rose Motif. Block to measure 12 x 12 inches.
Sew 4 x 6 motifs neatly together, alternating Rose and Textured Motifs. With right side facing, attach Field Green to a corner sc, ch 1, 2 sc where yarn was attached, * sc in each sc to within center sc of next corner, 3 sc in center sc. Repeat from * 2 more times; sc in each remaining sc, sc in same place as first 2 sc. Join with sl st to first sc. Ch 1, turn, and work sl st loosely in each sc. Join, break off and fasten. Block to measurements.
