MATERIALS:
J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 9 balls of Black.
Steel Crochet Hook No. 1.
1½ yards of cable cord No. 250.
½ yard lining material.
½ yard of buckram.
4 small buttons for Hat.
1½ yards of veiling.

Use a triple thread throughout entire set.

HAT

CROWN … Starting at center back, ch 29 to measure 5½ inches. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat the 2nd row until piece measures 21 inches. Break off.
   Make a narrow hem across one long side, starting from nothing at back edge and graduating the hem to measure ¾ inch at center front. Then graduate back to nothing (this is top edge of Crown). Place this piece on head and overlap the top edge to fit. Sew in place.

BRIM … Ch 30. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: (Sc in next 5 sc, ch 4) 4 times; sc in last 5 sc. Ch 1, turn. 3rd and all odd rows: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. 4th row: Sc in 4 sc, (ch 4, sc in next 5 sc) 3 times; sc in last 6 sc. Ch 1, turn. 6th row: Sc in 3 sc (ch 4, sc in next 5 sc) 4 times; ch 4, sc in last 2 sc. Ch 1, turn. 8th row: Sc in 2 sc (ch 4, sc in next 5 sc) 4 times; ch 4, sc in last 3 sc. Ch 1, turn. 10th row: Sc in next sc, (ch 4, sc in next 5 sc) 4 times; ch 4, sc in last 4 sc. Ch 1, turn.
   Repeat 2nd to 10th rows incl until piece measures same length as lower edge of Crown. Roll Brim lengthwise and sew edge neatly in place. Place lower edge of Crown at center of rolled Brim where edge is sewn and sew Brim to Crown.
   Sew small buttons to Brim (see illustration). Sew each end of veiling to each back edge of Hat.

BAG

   Ch 86 to measure 15½ inches. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd and 3rd rows: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn.
   Now work in pattern as for Brim of Hat until piece measures 8 inches in all. On next row, sl st across 1st 7 sc, ch 1 and continue in pattern to within last 6 sc (6 sc decreased at both ends). Ch 1, turn. Work in pattern as before for 2 more inches. Then ch 7 to turn at end of last row. Drop this thread, attach thread (3 strands) to opposite end, ch 6 and break off. Now work in pattern over 1st ch, across Bag to last ch of ch-6. Continue in pattern for 8 more inches. Work 3 rows of sc and break off. Line Bag with buckram and lining material. Fold in half and sew sides neatly together. Sew the lower edges of each side piece to bottom edge of Bag.

HANDLE … Cut cable cord in half to make 2 handles. Sew ends of each piece securely together. Ch 8. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn.
   Repeat 2nd row until piece is long enough to go around one piece of cable cord. Break off. Sew crocheted piece over cable cord. Make a box pleat at center top of Bag 3½ inches wide and sew in place. Place Handle over this pleat and sew securely to Bag. Finish other side to correspond. Fasten Bag with snap fasteners.
