CHAIR BACK (First Motif) … Ch 10, join with sl st. 1st rnd: 20 s c in ring; join. 2nd rnd: * Ch 3, d c in next s c, 2 d c in next s c, d c in next 2 s c. Ch 3, turn; d c in 1st d c, d c in next 4 d c, 2 d c in turning ch, ch 3, turn. D c in 1st d c, d c in each d c and in turning ch, ch 3, s c in same place as last d c (side of petal). Working along side of petal, ch 2, s c at base of ch-3 below, ch 2, sl st where last d c of 1st row of petal was made. Repeat from * around, ending with d c in same place as last d c of last petal (5 petals). 3rd rnd: * Ch 5, s c in 3rd ch from hook (p), ch 2, ch-3 p, ch 2, s c between ch-3 and 1st d c of next petal (a p-loop); make another p-loop, s c between center d c's of same petal, a p-loop, s c between last 2 d c of same petal. Repeat from * around. Fasten off.
Second Motif … Work as for 1st motif to within 3rd rnd. 3rd rnd: Make a p-loop, s c between ch-3 and 1st d c of next petal, ch 2, ch-3 p, ch 1, s c in corresponding p-loop on 1st motif, ch 1, ch-3 p, ch 2, s c between center d c's of same petal on 2nd motif; join next loop to 1st motif as before and complete rnd as for 1st motif. Fasten off. Make 7 more motifs, joining to previous one as 2nd was joined to 1st (4 p-loops on each motif at top, between joinings).
SIDE … Make another motif, joining as before but leaving only 2 free p-loops at top of previous motif (corner motif). Make and join 4 more motifs, leaving 4 free p-loops at top as before. Work opposite side to correspond.
LOWER EDGE … Make and join another motif as before, leaving 2 free p-loops at top of previous motif (another corner). Make and join another motif at opposite side to form another corner. Now make and join 6 more motifs, leaving 4 free p-loops at top and joining last motif at both sides.
HEADING … 1st rnd: Attach thread to 9th free p-loop, counting to right of corner motif at top; ch 5, tr tr in loop of next motif; (ch 7, d c in next loop) twice, ch 7, tr tr in next loop, tr tr in next loop of next motif; (ch 7, d c in next loop) twice; ch 7, tr tr in next loop, tr tr in next 2 loops of corner motif, * tr tr in loop of next motif; (ch 7, d c in next loop) twice; ch 7, tr tr in next loop. Repeat from * around, making corners as before and ending with ch 7, sl st in 5th st of ch-5. 2nd rnd: Ch 5, * skip 2 sts, d c in next st, ch 2. Repeat from * to within 2 sts from corner; omit ch-2, skip 4 sts, d c in next st. Then continue as before, making other corners to correspond with first corner, and ending with ch 2, sl st in 3rd st of ch-5. 3rd rnd: Ch 3, * 2 d c in sp, d c in next d c. Repeat from * around, making only 1 d c in 3 sps at corners. Join and fasten off.
EDGING … 1st rnd: Attach thread to p-loop on any motif (except corner motif) to left of joining, ch 10, * d c in next loop, ch 7. Repeat from * until 6 loops are made, ** do not ch 7 but make a d c in next free loop; ch 7 and make 6 loops as before. Repeat from ** around, making 8 loops (instead of 6) at corners, and ending with d c, sl st in 3rd st of ch-10. 2nd rnd: Sl st in next 3 ch of loop, 5 s c in same loop, 5 s c in next loop, ch 7, turn. Sl st in 1st s c of previous loop, turn. * Into ch-7 loop just made, make (2 s c, ch-3 p) 3 times; 2 s c in same loop, 4 s c in incompleted loop, 5 s c in next loop, ch 7, turn. Sl st in same place where last ch-7 started, turn. Repeat from * until 5 p-loops are made, then make 2 s c in incompleted loop, 2 s c in next loop, ch 3, turn. Sl st in same place where last ch-7 started, turn. Into ch-3 loop make 2 s c, ch-3 p, 2 s c; 5 s c in incompleted loop, 5 s c in next loop, ch 7, turn. Sl st in same place where ch-3 started; turn and continue thus around, making 7 p-loops at corners. Fasten off.
Block lace, curving lower edge. Baste lace to linen, being sure lower edge is properly curved. Sew securely in place. Cut away excess linen, allowing for a narrow hem. Hem neatly.
ARM PIECES … Make 6 motifs, joining as before, for each long side (the first and last motifs of longer sides to form corner motifs) and 3 motifs for top and bottom. Complete as for chair back, keeping lower edge straight.
