Cottage Chair Set Pattern #7233

MATERIALS: Clark's O.N.T. Lustersheen, 1 skein of White and 4 skeins of Blue.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 6 or 7.

Chair Seat—about 16 x 16 inches, measuring across center.
Chair Back—about 8 x 14½ inches.

Gauge: 10 sts make 1 inch; 4 rows make 1 inch (1 square on chart is equivalent to 3 d c).

To Change Color: Before drawing through last 2 loops of last d c of one color-group, drop this color, pick up second color, thread over and draw through the 2 loops on hook. Continue with second color according to chart, carrying the dropped color along top of previous row and working over it to conceal it.

CHAIR SEAT … Starting at front edge, with Blue ch 125. 1st row: D c in 4th ch from hook, d c in next 4 ch, leaving the last 2 loops on hook; pick up White and draw through 2 loops on hook. Then, holding Blue across foundation chain and working over it, make 3 White d c, leaving last 2 loops on hook. Drop White, pick up Blue and draw through 2 loops. Working into each ch across, make 9 Blue d c; (3 White d c, 3 Blue d c) 5 times; 3 White d c, 9 Blue d c, 3 White d c, 9 Blue d c; (3 White d c, 3 Blue d c) 5 times, 3 White d c, 9 Blue d c, 3 White d c, 6 Blue d c—123 d c in all, counting ch-3 as 1 d c. Ch. 3, turn. 2nd row: 2 d c in 1st d c (2 d c increased), * d c in each Blue d c, d c in each White d c. Repeat from * across, changing colors as before and always concealing unused color, ending row with 3 d c in last d c. Ch 3, turn. 3rd row: 2 d c in 1st d c, d c in each Blue d c, 3 White d c, 12 Blue d c, (3 White d c, 3 Blue d c) 4 times; 3 White d c, 12 Blue d c, 3 White d c, 12 Blue d c, (3 White d c, 3 Blue d c) 4 times, 3 White d c, 12 Blue d c, 3 White d c, d c in each Blue d c to end, ending with 3 d c in last d c. Ch 3, turn. Now follow chart, starting at 4th row, increasing 2 d c at both ends of each row until there are 159 d c in the row. When work reaches the shaping at top, dec. 2 d c at both ends of each row until 123 d c remain—to dec., work off 2 d c as 1 d c twice. Fasten off.

Make another piece like this, using Blue only. Block pieces. Cut two thicknesses of any material to same shape as crocheted pieces. Sew the 2 pieces of material together, leaving an opening. After filling with cotton batting, sew up opening (finished pad should be slightly smaller than crocheted pieces). Place wrong sides of crocheted pieces together and baste edges, leaving an opening of 12 inches at top. Then bind basted edges and both edges of opening. Insert pad and sew edges of opening together. Sew two 8-inch lengths of bias binding at each corner of top edge, for ties (stitch raw edges together).

CHAIR BACK … Starting at lower edge, with Blue ch 101. 1st row: D c in 4th ch from hook, d c in next 10 ch, leaving last 2 loops on hook; attach White and draw through 2 loops. Then working into each ch across, make (3 White d c, 3 Blue d c) 3 times; 3 White d c, 33 Blue d c; (3 White d c, 3 Blue d c) 3 times, 3 White d c, 12 Blue d c—99 d c, counting turning ch as 1 d c. Ch 3, turn. Now follow chart for chair back, increasing as for chair seat until there are 135 d c in the row. When work reaches shaping at top, dec. 2 d c at both ends of each row until 99 d c remain. Break off. Make another piece, using Blue only. Block pieces. Finish as for chair seat.
