Measurements: Bust—34 inches. Length from top of shoulder—18½ inches. Length of sleeve, underarm seam—3½ inches.
Gauge: 3 knots (2 sps) make 1 inch; 4 rows make 1 inch.
Back. Starting at bottom of waistband, ch 135 (to measure about 15 inches). 1st row: S c in 3rd ch from hook, * ch 1, skip 1 ch, s c in next ch. Repeat from * across (67 ch-1 sps). Ch 2, turn. 2nd row: S c in ch-1 sp, * ch 1, s c in next ch-1 sp. Repeat from * across, ending row with s c in turning ch. Ch 2, turn. Repeat 2nd row until piece measures 3 inches. Then work as follows: 1st row: Draw loop out on hook ⅛ inch, then make a ch st. Insert hook between loop and single thread of this ch and make an s c (1 knot st made). Make another knot st, * skip ch-1 sp, s c in next sp, 2 knot sts. Repeat from * across (34 double knot sts). Make a ⅜-inch knot st at end of each row for turning; all other knot sts will be made as before. 2nd row: 1 knot st, * s c in double loop of right side of next knot, s c in double loop of left of same knot, 2 knot sts. Repeat from * across. 1 knot st, turn. Repeat 2nd row, increasing 2 knot sts at both ends of one row every 1½ inches until there are 42 double knot sts in the row (to increase, make s c in double loop of one side of center knot, 2 knot sts, s c on other side of same center knot). Work in pattern until piece measures 10 inches in all.
To Shape Armholes: Dec. 1 double knot st at both ends of every other row 5 times. (To decrease, s c on one side of next knot, then s c on other side of following knot and continue in pattern across. Work straight until piece measures 7 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulders, dec. 1 double knot st at both ends of every row twice. Then, continuing with shoulder shaping, work across next 10 double knot sts, turn (thus starting neck shaping). Hereafter, dec. 1 double knot st at both ends of each row until 1 double knot st remains. Break off. Attach thread to 11th loop from other armhole edge and work to correspond. Break off.
Front. Starting at bottom of waistband, ch 143 (to measure about 16 inches). Work waistband as for Back until piece measures 3 inches (71 ch-1 sps). Then work in knot st pattern (36 double knots in 1st row), increasing 1 double knot st at both ends of one row every 1½ inches until there are 46 knot sts in the row. Work straight until piece measures 11 inches in all.
To Shape Armholes: Dec. 2 double knot sts at both ends of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 double knot st at both ends of every other row 3 times (32 double knot sts). On next row, work across 1st 16 double knot sts, turn (thus starting center front opening). Work straight until piece measures 4½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. On next row, starting at armhole edge, work in pattern to within last 3 double knots from center front opening, turn (thus starting neck shaping). Hereafter dec. 1 double knot st at neck edge only 5 times (8 knot sts remain). Work straight until piece measures 7 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulder, dec. 2 double knot sts at armhole edge each row until 2 double knot sts remain. Break off. Attach thread at base of center front opening and work opposite side to correspond.
Sleeves. Starting at bottom, ch 119 (to measure about 12 inches). Work as for waistband for 1 inch (59 sps on row). Then work in knot st pattern as for Back (30 double knot sts), increasing 1 double knot st at both ends of one row every inch until there are 34 double knot sts in the row. Work straight until piece measures 3½ inches. To shape top of sleeve, dec. 1 double knot st at both ends of each of next 4 rows. Then dec. 1 double knot st at both ends of every other row 3 times (20 double knot sts). Then dec. 1 double knot st at end of each row until 4 sps and 4 knots remain. Break off.
Sew up shoulder seams. Sew up underarm seams to within 4½ from beginning of waistband, easing in extra fullness of Front 1½ inches down from armhole shaping. Sew up sleeve seams and sew sleeves in. Work a l-inch band around neck edge as for waistband of Back, decreasing if necessary to keep work flat. Work a row of s c along center front opening, making 3 ch-4 loops at equal distances apart on right Front edge. Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonloops. Work a row of s c along side openings, making 3 ch-4 loops on each side of front band. Sew buttons onto back band to correspond with buttonloops.
