Materials: J. & P. Coats Tatting Cotton, size 70, or if you wish to make the doily even daintier and more lacy, use J. & P. Coats or Clark's O.N.T. Mercerized Crochet size 80 or 100. Milward's steel crochet hook No. 13 or 14.

Ch 8, join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: * Ch 40, s c in ring. Repeat from * 8 more times (9 loops). Break off thread and tie firmly. 2nd rnd: Attach thread at top of a loop. * Ch 12, d tr in 5th st down from top of same loop, d tr in 5th st down from top of next loop, ch 12, s c in top of same loop. Repeat from * around. 3rd rnd: Ch 25, * s c in 8th ch from hook (to form ring), ch 12, d tr in st from which ch started. Ch 10, thread over hook 5 times and insert hook in 6th st of ch-12 loop below. (Work off 2 loops at a time, same as for d c.) Thread over 5 times, insert hook in 6th st of next loop and work off as before. Ch 10, d tr in st directly above top of next loop of 1st rnd. Ch 20, repeat from * around, ending with thread over 9 times, insert hook in 5th st of ch-25.

4th rnd: ** Ch 15, * thread over 5 times, insert hook through ring at top of next loop, ch 1, repeat from * 10 more times, omitting last ch 1. Ch 15, s c in joining of 4 spokes of previous rnd. Repeat from ** around. After last ch-15, break off thread and tie firmly.

5th rnd: Attach thread at top of 1st thread-over loop of one of the motifs. Ch 14, s c in 5th st from hook (to form picot), ch 1, * thread over 7 times, insert hook in top of next thread-over loop of motif, ch 6, s c in 5th ch from hook, ch 1, repeat from * 9 more times. Omit last ch-1 and make a ch-5 picot, thread over 7 times and insert hook in 1st thread-over of next motif and continue as before. At end of rnd, break off and tie firmly.
