MATERIALS:

CLARK'S O.N.T. or J. & P. COATS PEARL COTTON, size 5, 3 balls of any color.

Steel crochet hook No. 1/0 (zero).

A pair of slipper soles.

GAUGE: 6 sts make 1 inch; 3 sc and 2 h dc rows make 1 inch.

Sizes: Small (Medium, Large) Changes in parentheses.

VAMP ... Starting at toe with double thread, ch 12. 1st row: H dc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across (10 sts). Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Work in the front loop (not in the top of the h dc) of each st as follows: 2 sc in 1st st, sc in each st across, 2 sc in last st (12 sts). Ch 2, turn. There is a ch ridge on right side. 3rd row: 2 h dc in 1st st, h dc in each st across, 2 h dc in last st (14 sts). Ch 2, turn. Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows alternately until there are on row 26 sts (28 sts, 30 sts).

Now inc 1 st at both ends of every other row until there are on row 30 sts (34 sts, 38 sts).

Work straight until there are completed in all 20 rows (22 rows, 24 rows). Fasten off.

FRINGE ... Cut a cardboard 3 inches long and 1 inch wide. Holding last row of Vamp toward you, right side upper­most, attach double thread in end st of last ch ridge. Pass thread over width of cardboard, insert hook in same st where thread was attached, thread over and pull loop through, thread over and draw through 1 loop, thread over and draw through remaining 2 loops (a loop st made). * Pass thread over cardboard, insert hook in next st and complete a loop st; make another loop st in same place, skip 1 st. Repeat from * across top of Vamp. Ch 1, turn. Brush Fringe toward toe. Work last row of Vamp and top of Fringe together with sc. Fasten off.

Pin Vamp in place on sole and sew to the stitching around edge of sole. Make other scuff same as this.
