Steel crochet hook No. 6 or 7.
2 bone rings, 1 inch in diameter.
Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Six Strand Embroidery Floss, 2 skeins of a contrasting color.
SUGAR BOWL
FRONT ... 1st row: Attach thread to bone ring, ch 4, 41 tr in ring, ch 3, turn. 2nd row: Work in back loop only of each st as follows: At base of ch-3 make dc, ch 2 and 2 dc; then ch 1, work tr in each tr across with ch 1 between; ch 1, in top st of turning ch make 2 dc, ch 2 and 2 dc. Ch 5, turn. 3rd row: In ch-2 sp make 2 dc, ch 2 and 2 dc (shell made), ch 4, skip next sp, sc in next sp, (ch 3, sc in next sp) 38 times; ch 4, skip last ch-1 sp, in ch-2 sp make a shell as before. Ch 5, turn. 4th row: Make a shell in sp of shell, ch 4, skip ch-4 sp, * sc in next loop, ch 3. Repeat from * across, ending with ch 4; skip ch-4 sp, shell in sp of shell. Ch 5, turn. Repeat the 4th row until 1 ch-3 loop remains. Ch 5, turn. Last row: Shell in sp of shell, ch 4, skip ch-4 sp, sc in ch-3 loop, ch 4, skip next ch-4 sp, 2 dc in sp of next shell, ch 1, sl st in sp of last shell made, ch 1, 2 dc in same place as last 2 dc were made. Fasten off.
BACK ... With wrong side of first row facing, attach thread to front loop at top of 1st st, ch 3, at base of ch-3 make dc, ch 2 and 2 dc, then ch 1, work tr in front loop only of each st across with ch-1 between, ending with ch 1, then in top st of turning ch make 2 dc, ch 2 and 2 dc. Ch 5, turn. Next row: Shell in sp of shell, ch 4, skip next sp and tr, (sc in next sp, h dc in next tr) 38 times; sc in next sp, ch 4, shell in sp of shell. Ch 5, turn. Following row: Shell over shell, ch 4, skip 1st sc, * sc in next dc, dc in next sc. Repeat from * across, ending with sc in last dc; ch 4, skip next sc and next sp, shell over shell. Ch 5, turn (1 st decreased at each end of solid section). Repeat this last row 13 more times. Work 13 more rows in pattern (always having dc over sc and sc over dc), but decreasing 1 st at beginning of each row only. Hereafter keeping continuity of pattern, dec 2 sts at each end of each row until only 1 st remains, joining the last 2 shells as on Front. Fasten off. Sew edges of solid section of Back to corresponding edges of center section of Front, leaving the shells free.
HANDLE (Make 2) ... With double strand, ch 5, join. 1st rnd: Sc in each st around. Do not join rnds. 2nd and all following rnds: Sc in each sc around (inserting hook from inside of circle), until piece measures 5 inches. Fasten off. Sew Handles between pieces as in illustration.
CREAM PITCHER
Work exactly as for Sugar Bowl, omitting left handle.
CORD ... Divide the 2 skeins of Six Strand into 4 even lengths. Twist these strands together tightly. Double the twisted strands and give them a second twist in the opposite direction. Write the word "Sugar" on a piece of paper. Place word diagonally on right side of Sugar Bowl and pin in place. Sew cord over letters. Cut off remaining cord. Remove paper and finish off ends of cord. Using remainder of cord, write the word "Cream" on Cream Pitcher in same way.
