MATERIALS:

CLARK'S O.N.T. COTTON RUG YARN, 2 balls of light color and 1 ball of dark color for each size.

Clark's O.N.T. Rug and Afghan Hook, size G.

2 ball buttons.

Sizes: 6" (7", 8") Changes for Length of Sole in parentheses.

BOTTOM SOLE ... With dark color, ch 18 sts (20 sts, 22 sts) to measure 5" (5½", 6").

1st rnd: 4 sc in 2nd ch from hook (heel), sc in each of next 9 ch (10 ch, 11 ch) dc in each of next 6 ch (7 ch, 8 ch) make 5 dc in last ch (toe). Now work­ing along opposite side of foundation chain, make dc in each of next 6 ch (7 ch, 8 ch) sc in each of next 9 ch (10 ch, 11 ch).

2nd, 3rd and 4th rnds: Sc in each st around, increasing 2 sc evenly across heel and 5 sc evenly across toe—to inc, work 2 sc in 1 sc. 5th rnd: Sl st in each st around. Fasten off.

TOP SOLE ... With light color work exactly as for Bottom Sole.

UPPER ... Attach light color to st at center back of top sole. 1st rnd: With wrong side facing, ch 3, then working through both loops of each sl st work dc in each st around. Join with sl st in top of ch-3. 2nd rnd: Ch 3, dc in next 17 sts (19 sts, 21 sts) * thread over, (insert hook in back loop only of next st and draw loop through) twice; thread over and draw through 3 loops, thread over and draw through remaining 2 loops (dc dec made). Re­peat from * 11 more times; then work dc (through both loops) in each of re­maining 18 sts (20 sts, 22 sts). Join.

3rd rnd: Ch 1, sc in same place as sl st, sc in next 15 sts (17 sts, 19 sts) then working through both loops of each st, work dc decreases as before across next 16 sts (8 decreases), sc in each of re­maining 16 sts (18 sts, 20 sts). Join.

4th rnd: Ch 4, tr in front loop of each st around. Join with sl st. 5th rnd: Ch 1, insert hook in same place as sl st and in back loop of corresponding st below, yarn over and draw loop through, finish as for sc (a raised st made); * insert hook through both loops of next tr and through back loop of corre­sponding st below, yarn over and draw loop through, finish as for sc. Repeat from * around. Join and fasten off.

ANKLE STRAP ... Ch 35. 1st row: Tr in 5th ch from hook and in each ch across. Fasten off. 2nd row: Attach thread at top of turning ch, insert hook in same place and also at base of same ch, thread over and draw loop through both thicknesses, * insert hook through both loops of next tr and through re­maining loop of ch at base of same tr, thread over and draw loop completely through both thicknesses and through loop on hook. Repeat from * across. Fasten off.

FINISHING ... Place dark sole under shoe with wrong sides of soles facing. Thread large sewing needle with strand of dark color and overcast the two soles together, working through both loops of sc of bottom sole and through 1 loop only of sc of top sole. Rnd of sl st remains free on bottom of dark sole. Sew center 2 inches of ankle strap to back of shoe. Sew on button and use any loop of raised st as buttonloop.

Make other slipper same as this.
