Materials Required—
AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY "PURITAN" MERCERIZED CROCHET AND KNITTING COTTON
2 400-yd. Balls White.
"STAR" PEARL COTTON, SIZE 5
5 60-yd. Balls Green.
Steel Crochet Hook No. 4.

All mats are worked with a double strand of thread.

SMALL OVAL MAT. With White, ch 35, 3 d c in 4th st from hook, 1 d c in each of the next 30 sts, 4 d c in end ch, working on other side of ch, work 1 d c in each of the next 30 sts, join to ch 3.
2nd Row—Ch 3, 2 d c in same space, 3 d c in each of the next 4 d c, 1 d c each of the next 28 d c, 3 d c in each of the next 6 d c, 1 d c in each of the next 28 d c, 3 d c in next d c, join, drop White. (92 d c)
3rd Row—With Green, work 1 s c in each st, drop Green.
4th Row—With White, work a puff st in each st picking up back loop of st only, (puff st: thread over needle, insert in st and pull loop through, thread over needle, insert in same st, pull loop through, thread over and pull through all loops on needle but one, thread over and pull through 2 loops) drop White.
5th Row—With Green and picking up back loop of st only, work 1 s c in each st on sides of mat and 2 s c in each of the 12 sts at each end, drop Green.
6th Row—With White, repeat 4th row.
The following rows are all worked in back loop of st only.
7th Row—With Green, 1 s c in each st on sides increasing 14 sts at each end. (144 sts)
8th Row—With White, ch 3, (counts as 1 d c) 1 d c in each of the next 3 s c carrying the Green thread underneath, with Green, 1 d c in each of the next 8 s c carrying the White thread underneath, repeat from beginning all around, join. When changing Color always complete the last half of st with the next Color to be used.
9th Row—With White, ch 3, d c in same space, 1 d c in each of the next 2 d c, 2 d c in next d c, 1 d c in next d c, * with Green, 1 d c in each of the next 6 d c, with White, 1 d c in next d c, 2 d c in next d c, 1 d c in each of the next 2 d c, 2 d c in next d c, 1 d c in next d c, repeat from *, with Green, 1 d c in each of the next 6 d c, * with White, 1 d c in each of the next 6 d c, with Green, 1 d c in each of the next 6 d c, repeat from * twice, * with White, 1 d c in next d c, 2 d c in next d c, 1 d c in each of the next 2 d c, 2 d c in next d c, 1 d c in next d c, with Green, 1 d c in each of the next 6 d c, repeat from * twice, * with White, 1 d c in each of the next 6 d c, with Green, 1 d c in each of the next 6 d c, repeat from * twice, with White, 1 d c in next d c, join.
10th Row—Working in d c same as last row, work 1 d c in Green in each of the 4 d c in center of each Green section all around having 8 d c in White between each Green section on sides and increasing 3 sts in each of the 3 White sections at each end, join.
11th Row—Same as last row having 1 d c in Green in each of the 2 center sts in each Green section all around and having 10 d c in White between each Green section in sides and increasing 2 sts in each of the 3 White sections at each end, drop Green.
12th Row—With White, 1 d c in each d c increasing a sufficient number of times at each end to keep work flat, drop White.
13th Row—With Green, 1 s c in each d c increasing a sufficient number of times at each end to keep work flat, drop Green.
14th Row—With White, 1 puff st in each st, drop White.
15th Row—With Green, 1 s c in each puff st taking up both loops of st, break Green.
16th Row—With White, * ch 1, skip 2 s c, 5 d c with ch 1 between each d c in next st, ch 1, skip 2 s c, s c in next s c, repeat from * all around, break thread.
LARGE OVAL MAT. Work 1st 7 rows of small oval mat.
8th Row—With White, puff st in each s c.
9th Row—With Green, work 1 s c in each puff st on each side and increasing in every 3rd st 12 times at each end.
10th Row—Sl st to 14th st from center st at end of mat and work same as 8th row of small oval mat.
11th Row—With White, ch 3, d c in same space, 1 d c in each of the next 2 d c, 2 d c in next d c, 1 d c in next d c, * with Green, 1 d c in each of the next 6 d c, with White, 1 d c in next d c, 2 d c in next d c, 1 d c in each of the next 2 d c, 2 d c in next d c, 1 d c in next d c, repeat from *, with Green, 1 d c in each of the next 6 d c, * with White, 1 d c in each of the next 6 d c, with Green, 1 d c in each of the next 6 d c, repeat from * 3 times, * with White, 1 d c in next d c, 2 d c in next d c, 1 d c in each of the next 2 d c, 2 d c in next d c, 1 d c in next d c, with Green, 1 d c in each of the next 6 d c, repeat from * twice, * with White, 1 d c in each of the next 6 d c, with Green, 1 d c in each of the next 6 d c, repeat from * 3 times, with White, 1 d c in next d c, join. Repeat the 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th and 14th row of small oval.
17th Row—With Green, 1 s c in each puff at increasing a sufficient number of times at each end to keep work flat.
18th Row—With White, repeat puff st row, then repeat 15th and 16th rows of small oval.
ROUND MAT. With White, ch 6, join to form a ring, ch 3 and work 15 d c in ring, join.
2nd Row—Ch 3, d c in same space, * 2 d c in next d c, repeat from * all around. (32 d c)
3rd Row—With Green, * 1 s c in next d c, 2 s c in next d c, repeat from * all around, drop Green.
The remainder of mat is worked in back loop of st only.
4th Row—With White, puff st in each st, drop White.
5th Row—Same as 3rd row.
6th Row—Same as 8th row of small oval mat.
7th Row—With White, ch 3, 1 d c in same space, 1 d c in each of the next 2 d c, 2 d c in next d c, 1 d c in next d c, with Green, 1 d c in each of the next 6 sts, * With White, 1 d c in next d c, 2 d c in next d c, 1 d c in each of the next 2 d c, 2 d c in next d c, 1 d c in next d c, with Green, 1 d c in each of the next 6 d c, repeat from * all around ending row with 1 d c in White, join.
8th Row—With White, ch 3, 1 d c in next d c, 2 d c in each of the next 2 d c, 1 d c in each of the next 4 d c, with Green, 1 d c in each of the next 4 d c, * with White, 1 d c in each of the next 4 d c, 2 d c in each of the next 2 d c, 1 d c in each of the next 4 d c, with Green, 1 d c in each of the next 4 d c, repeat from * all around, with White, 1 d c in each of the last 2 d c, join.
9th Row—With White, ch 3, 1 d c in each of the next 8 d c, 2 d c in next d c, 1 d c in next d c, with Green, 1 d c in each of the next 2 d c, * with White, 1 d c in next d c, 2 d c in next d c, 1 d c in each of the next 10 d c, 2 d c in next d c, 1 d c in next d c, with Green, 1 d c in each of the next 2 d c, repeat from * all around, with White, 1 d c in each of the next 4 d c, join.
10th Row—With White, 1 d c in each d c increasing in every 4th d c, drop White.
11th Row—With Green, 1 s c in each d c, drop Green.
12th Row—With White, puff st in each st, drop White.
13th Row—With Green, 1 s c in each s c working in both loops of st and increasing if necessary to keep work flat.
14th Row—Same as 16th row of small oval mat.
