Crocheted Vest Pattern

Size 14-16

Materials Required—AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY "DAWN" ZEPHYR WOOL or "DAWN" GERMANTOWN TYPE WOOL
6 ozs. Dark Blue or Main Color.
2 ozs. each of Red and Green.
Bone Crochet Hook No. 3 or 4.
5 Buttons.

Gauge. 5 patterns = 2 inches.

It is important that work is crocheted loosely, see gauge. Directions are given for size 14, size 16 are given in parenthesis. The entire back is worked in main Color.

Ch 70 (74) and work 69 s c (73) on ch, ch 1, turn.
2nd Row. S c in s c, * ch 1, skip 1 s c, s c in next s c, repeat from * across row, ch 1, turn.
3rd Row. S c in s c, * ch 1, s c in next s c, repeat from * across row and repeat 3rd row for pattern.
Work 15 more rows even.
Next Row. Decrease 1 pattern each side. To decrease at beginning of row, ch 2, skip the 1st s c and ch and s c into 2nd s c. At end of row insert hook in next to the last s c and draw yarn through, yarn over, insert in last s c and draw yarn through all loops on needle. Work 11 rows even.
* Next row increase each side by working 2 s c in 1st and last st. In the following row work a ch between these 2 s c at each end to complete the pattern. Work 4 rows even. Repeat from * once and work 8 more rows even. Next row, slip st to 4th s c (3rd s c) ch 1 and work across row omitting the last 3 s c (2 s c). Next row decrease 1 pattern each side and work 25 rows (26) even. Armhole should measure 6¾ inches (7 inches) from the 1st decreasing point.
Next Row. * Slip st to 3rd s c, ch 1, s c in next s c, ch 1 and continue pattern to within the last 4 s c, ch 1, insert in next s c, yarn over, insert in next s c, yarn over and draw through all loops on needle. Ch 1, turn and repeat from * twice (9 s c decreased each side).
Front. This is worked in the following Color scheme. * 2 rows Red, 6 rows Blue or Main Color, 3 rows Green, 2 rows Red, 6 rows Blue, repeat from *.
With Blue or Main Color, ch 46 (48) and work 45 (47) s c on ch, then start working in Color scheme given above.
Work 16 rows even. Next row. Decrease 1 pattern at underarm and work 11 rows even. Next row. * Increase at underarm by working 2 s c in last st. In the following row work a ch between the 2 s c to complete a pattern. Work 4 rows even. Repeat from * twice and work 2 more rows even. Next row. Decrease 3 s c (2 s c) at underarm. Next row decrease 1 pattern at underarm and work 15 rows even.
Next Row. Decrease 3 s c at neck side then decrease 1 s c at neck side every row until 9 patterns remain and work 1 row (2 rows) even. Next 2 rows decrease 3 s c at armhole edge.
Weaving is done with a double strand of yarn and is worked over one stitch and under the next. Two rows are worked in each mesh. In the second row reverse the "over" and "under."
Beginning at front edge, * weave 2 meshes in Red, skip 4 meshes and weave the next 2 meshes in Green, skip 4 meshes and repeat from *. Work other front to correspond. Sew shoulder and underarm seams.
With Blue or Main Color work 1 row of s c around armholes. Beginning at lower left front work a row of s c across fronts and neck, drawing in the neck line of fronts to 6½ inches, turn. Work a second row across fronts and neck working 5 buttonholes in the center of the 5 lower Blue sections of right front (buttonhole, ch 2, skip 2 s c, s c in next s c). Work 3 s c in corners to keep work flat. Ch 1, turn and work 3rd row of s c working 2 s c over each buttonhole. Sew buttons in position.
