Sacque Pattern #5226

MATERIALS:
J. & P. COATS or CLARK'S O.N.T. PEARL COTTON, size 5, 12 balls.
Steel Crochet Hook No. 1/0.
2½ yards ribbon, ½ wide.

GAUGE: 4 sts make 1 inch; 4 rows make 1 inch.

Starting at bottom of back, make a chain to measure about 9 inches (8 ch sts to 1 inch). 1st row: Insert hook in 4th ch from hook and * draw loop through, insert hook in next ch and draw loop through, thread over and draw through 1 loop, (thread over and draw through 2 loops) twice (thus forming a sp followed by a single loop and a group); ch 1, insert hook in next ch. Repeat from * across until there are 24 groups. Cut off remaining ch. Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: Insert hook between 1st group and the single loop following, * draw loop through, insert hook between single loop and group and draw loop through, thread over and draw through 1 loop, (thread over and draw through 2 loops) twice; ch 1, insert hook in sp between next group and the single loop following. Repeat from * across, ending with group preceding turning ch, inc 1 group—to inc a group at end of row, insert hook in same place where last loop of last st was drawn through and draw loop through, insert hook in top st of turning ch and draw loop through, complete group as before. Ch 7, turn. Next row: Draw up 1st loop in 4th ch from hook and 2nd loop in 5th ch and complete group, ch 1, draw up 1st loop of next group in next ch, draw up 2nd loop in next ch and complete group, ch 1 (2 groups increased), and work in pattern across, increasing 1 group at end of row. Ch 7, turn. Repeat this row until there are 54 groups on row. On last row, ch 3 to turn. Then work straight in pattern (without increasing) for 2 rows. Next row: Dec 1 group at both ends of row—to dec at beginning of row, do not work over 1st group; to dec at end of row, draw up 1st loop in next to last group from end and draw up 2nd loop in sp preceding turning ch. Continue decreasing 1 group at both ends of every 3rd row until 44 groups remain on row. Work 2 rows straight in pattern. Next row: Work in pattern across row, ch 39 (for sleeve), turn. Following row: Work in pattern across chain as on 1st row, continue in pattern across back, ch 39 (for other sleeve), turn.

Next row: Work in pattern across chain as before, continue in pattern across row (80 groups). Ch 3, turn. Work straight in pattern for 3 inches.

Next row: Work in pattern across 33 groups. Ch 3, turn. Work in pattern over these sts only for 2 inches, ending at neck edge. Ch 9, turn. Following row: Work in pattern across chain as on 1st row (3 groups increased at front edge), finish row in pattern. Work straight in pattern for 2½ inches. Next row: Starting at front edge, work across 18 groups. Ch 3, turn. Work 2 rows straight in pattern. Now inc 1 group at side edge on next row and every 3rd row thereafter until there are 23 groups on row. Work 2 rows straight in pattern. Next row: Starting at front edge, work in pattern across to within last 2 groups. Ch 3, turn. Following row: Dec 1 group at beginning of row, finish row in pattern. Repeat the last 2 rows alternately until 8 groups remain. Fasten off. Skip next 14 groups on back for neck, attach thread and work to correspond with other side.
Attach thread at outer edge of garment and work 1 row of sc around entire edge, making 3 sc in every 2 rows and 2 sc in each group. Join with sl st in 1st sc made. Next row: Ch 7, sc in 3rd ch from hook (a ch-3 p made), ch 1, dc in base of starting ch, * skip 3 sc, in next sc make dc, ch 1, p, ch 1 and dc. Repeat from * around, skipping only 2 (instead of 3) sc between dc's at corners. Join with sl st in 3rd st of starting ch and fasten off.
Cut 4 pieces of ribbon each 14 inches long. Draw one piece through back and front of sacque at base of edging 2 inches down from underarm and tie a bow; draw another piece of ribbon through both sides of sleeve 2 inches from underarm and tie a bow. Use the two remaining pieces of ribbon for other side. Cut two more pieces of ribbon each 17 inches long and tack one piece to each front at neck edge.
