MATERIALS:
Single Size
J. & P. COATS BEDSPREAD COTTON, 14 balls of White or Ecru.
Double Size
J. & P. COATS BEDSPREAD COTTON, 17 balls of White or Ecru.
Milward's Steel Crochet Hook No. 6.

GAUGE:
Each block measures about 18 inches square. For a single size spread, about 74½ x 110½ inches including edging, make 4 x 6 squares. For a double size spread, about 92½ x 110½ inches including edging, make 5 x 6 squares.

3 bls or sps make 1¼ inches; 3 rows make 1¼ inches.

SQUARE … Starting at center, ch 12, tr in 12th ch from hook. Now work in rnds as follows: 1st rnd: Ch 7, tr in base of last tr, * ch 7, tr in same place as last tr (a corner), ch 3, skip 3 ch, tr in next ch. Repeat from *, ending rnd with ch 3, skip 3 ch, tr in next tr, ch 7, join with sl st to 4th st of starting ch (a square of 3 x 3 sps). 2nd rnd: Ch 7, tr in next tr, * ch 3, skip 3 ch, tr in next ch, ch 7, tr in same place as last tr, (ch 3, tr in next tr) twice. Repeat from *, ending rnd with ch 3; join. 3rd rnd: Ch 7, tr in next tr, ch 3, tr in next tr, * in corner sp make 4 tr (a bl), ch 7 and 4 tr; tr in next tr, (ch 3, tr in next tr) 3 times. Repeat from *, ending rnd with ch 3; join. Beginning with the 4th rnd, follow chart until 10th rnd has been completed. 11th rnd: Ch 5, tr in sp, ch 1, tr in next tr, ch 1, tr in next sp, ch 1, tr in next tr (2 shadow sps made), * 9 bls, ch 7 for corner, 9 bls, (ch 1, tr in next sp, ch 1, tr in next tr) 3 times—3 shadow sps made. Repeat from *, ending rnd with 9 bls, ch 1, tr in next sp, ch 1, join. Beginning with 12th rnd follow chart to complete square (heavy line indicates start of rnd).
   Make necessary number of squares and sew together on wrong side with neat over-and-over stitches.

EDGING … Attach thread, ch 4 and work 3 rnds of tr, making corners as on squares and being careful edging does not ruffle.
