Milward's Steel Crochet Hook No. 7.
GAUGE ... 8 sts make 1 inch.
Starting at bottom, make a chain about 50 inches long for single size spread, or 65 inches long for double size spread. 1st row: D c in 4th ch from hook, d c in next ch (3 d c, counting the turning ch). Make a pc st as follows: * ch 1, 9 tr in next ch, drop loop from hook, insert hook in the ch-1 preceding the 9 tr and draw dropped loop through (a pc st made), d c in next 7 ch. Repeat from * across until row measures 37 inches for single size; or 52 inches for double size, ending with 3 d c (1 pc-st row made). Cut off remaining ch. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: S c in 1st 3 sts, * insert hook in back of pc st and in center tr of same pc st, draw loop through and finish as for an s c. Make s c in next 7 d c. Repeat from * across, ending with s c in top of turning ch. Ch 3, turn. 3rd row: D c in next (2nd) s c and in the following 3 s c, pc st in next s c, * d c in next 7 s c, pc st in next s c. Repeat from * across, ending with d c in last 9 s c. Ch 1, turn. 4th row: S c in each st across, working over pc sts as before, ending with s c in top of turning ch. Ch 3, turn. 5th row: D c in next (2nd) s c and in following 5 s c, * pc st in next s c, d c in next 7 s c. Repeat from * across, ending with d c in last 7 s c. Ch 1, turn. 6th row: Same as 4th row. 7th row: D c in next (2nd) s c and in the following 7 s c, * pc st in next s c, d c in next 7 s c. Repeat from * across, ending with d c in last 5 s c. Ch 1, turn. 8th row: Same as 4th row. 9th row: D c in next (2nd) s c and in following s c, * pc st in next s c, d c in next 7 s c. Repeat from * across, ending with d c in last 3 s c. Ch 1, turn. The 2nd to 9th rows incl. constitute the pattern. Work in pattern until piece measures 70 inches long, ending with the 2nd row and omitting last turning ch. Fasten off.
FRILL … Cut four 23-inch lengths of fabric. Seam short ends, thus forming a strip about 140 x 23 inches. This piece forms frill for one side of spread. Make a ¼ inch hem on short ends and on 1 long edge. Turn down ¾ inch at opposite long edge and gather this edge with 2 rows of stitching ¼ inch apart, to measure 72 inches. Sew gathered edge to long edge of crocheted piece, having it extend slightly above the crochet. Make another frill in same way and sew to opposite long side.
For foot of bed, cut two lengths (instead of 4) for single size or 3 lengths for double size. Gather top edge to necessary width and sew in place as before.
PILLOW … Cut 2 pieces, each 19 x 25 inches, for pillow case. For frill cut 4 pieces, each 4½ x 36 inches and join them to form a strip. Make a very narrow hem at one long edge. Gather opposite long edge to measure 2 yards and 16 inches. Place the 2 pillow case pieces together, right sides facing. Insert frill between the 2 pieces, having gathered edge along edges of pillow case pieces; baste in place. Stitch around 2 long sides and 1 short side. Stitch remaining frill to top of pillow case only, thus leaving opening for pillow. Sew together short ends of frill. Insert pillow and sew up opening, or close with snap fasteners.
