GAUGE:
Each block measures about 5 inches square. For a single size spread, about 72 x 108 inches, make 14 x 21 blocks. For a double size spread, about 87 x 108 inches, make 17 x 21 blocks.
BLOCK ... Starting at center, wind light color 10 times around a pencil. Slip thread off pencil—thus forming a ring. 1st rnd: 20 s c in ring. Join with sl st in 1st s c made. Fasten off. 2nd rnd: Attach dark color in front loop of any st. Always avoid having joinings of rnds over each other when attaching a new color. Ch 4, make tr in front loop of next and each st around, ending with tr in same st where thread was attached. Skip the ch-4 and join with sl st to top of 1st tr made. 3rd rnd: * Insert hook in back loop of next tr and in back loop of corresponding st on previous rnd, thread over, draw through 2 loops on hook and finish as for an s c. Repeat from * around (20 sts). Join with sl st to 1st s c made, and fasten off. This completes 1 dark ridge. 4th rnd: Attach light color in any s c (not over joining), ch 4 (to count as d c and ch-1). * D c in next s c, ch 1. Repeat from * around. Join last ch-1 with sl st to 3rd st of ch-4 first made (20 sps). Fasten off. 5th and 6th rnds: Repeat 2nd and 3rd rnds, thus making a second dark ridge (40 sts on 6th rnd). 7th rnd: Attach light color in any s c (not over joining), ch 4 to count as d c and ch-1, * (d c in next s c, ch 1) twice, skip 1 s c, d c in next s c, ch 1. Repeat from * around. Join last ch-1 with sl st to 3rd st of ch-4 first made. Fasten off (30 sps). 8th and 9th rnds: Repeat 2nd and 3rd rnds (60 sts on 9th rnd). 10th rnd: Attach light color as before, ch 4, * d c in next s c, ch 1, skip next s c, d c in next s c, ch 1. Repeat from * around. Join rnd as before (40 sps). 11th and 12th rnds: Repeat 2nd and 3rd rnds (80 sts on 12th rnd). 13th rnd: Attach light color as before, ch 4, * d c in next s c, ch 1, d c in next sc. (Ch 1, skip 1 s c, d c in next s c) 3 times; ch 1. Repeat from * around (50 sps). Join. 14th and 15th rnds: Repeat 2nd and 3rd rnds (100 s c on 15th rnd).
16th rnd: Attach light color as before, ch 1, s c in same place as thread was attached, s c in next 5 s c. * (Ch 2, skip 2 sts, d c in next st) twice; ch 2, skip 1 st, d c in next st, ch 2, skip 1 st. In next st make 3 tr with ch-2 between—this is corner. (Ch 2, skip 1 st, d c in next st) twice; ch 2, skip 2 sts, d c in next st, ch 2, skip 2 sts, s c in next 6 sts. Repeat from * around. Join last ch-2 to 1st s c made. 17th rnd: Ch 1, s c in same place as sl st, s c in next 5 s c, * (ch 2, d c in next d c) 3 times; ch 2, d c in next tr, ch 2. In center tr make d c, ch 5 and d c. Ch 2, d c in next tr; (ch 2, d c in next d c) 3 times; ch 2, s c in next 6 s c. Repeat from * around. Join and fasten off. 18th and 19th rnds: Repeat 2nd and 3rd rnds. 20th rnd: Attach light color to st directly above 1st s c of 6-s c group. Ch 4, * skip 1 st, d c in next st; (ch 2, skip 2 sts, d c in next st) 7 times; ch 5, d c in same place as last d c—this is corner; (ch 2, skip 2 sts, d c in next st) 6 times. Repeat from * around. Join and fasten off. This completes one block.
