From North, South, East and West, we give you the costumes of our continent, to crochet in J. & P. Coats and Clark's O.N.T. Threads. Clark's O.N.T. Mercerized Bedspread Cotton may be used where J. & P. Coats "Knit-Cro-Sheen" is recommended; also Clark's Big Ball Mercerized Crochet may be used in place of J. & P. Coats Big Ball Mercerized Crochet.
PANTIES ... Starting at waist make a chain long enough to reach around widest part of doll. Join, being careful not to twist. 1st to 4th rnds incl: Ch 3, dc in each st around. Join. For 11-inch dolls work 9 rnds (instead of 4 rnds). Ch 4 for crotch and sl st directly opposite. Break off. Draw cord through sts of 1st rnd.
SLIPPERS FOR 11-INCH DOLL ... Starting at center ch 10. 1st rnd: Dc in 4th ch from hook, make 2 dc in same ch, dc in next 5 ch, 6 dc in last ch (tie end); work along opposite side of starting chain to correspond, having 3 dc in same ch as first dc. Join with sl st to top of first dc. 2nd rnd: Ch 1, sc in same place as sl st, sc in each dc around, increasing 3 sc evenly over toe end. Join. 3rd rnd: Ch 3, picking up the back loop only of each sc, dc in each sc around. Join. 4th rnd: Ch 1, sc in same sp as sl st, sc in next 10 dc, (work off 2 dc as 1 sc—1 dc decreased) 3 times; sc in next 10 dc. Join and break off. Trim as desired.
PETTICOAT ... Cut a strip of 6-inch crinoline hemline binding 18 inches long. Gather across one long side to fit around doll's waist. Sew back seam, leaving a 1-inch opening at top. Sew bias binding around top. Sew a hook and eye at back. Turn up hem to correspond with length of skirt.
SKIRT ... Starting at narrow end with White, make a chain 7 inches long. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in each sc across. Drop White. Turn. 3rd row: Attach Spanish Red to first sc, sc in same sc and in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. 4th row: Sc in each sc across. Drop Spanish Red, pick up White. Make 2 rows of White and 2 rows of Spanish Red alternately until piece measures 32 inches, ending with Spanish Red. Break off. (More)
DRESS—Peplum ... Starting at waist with Shaded Lt. Yellows, ch 45 to reach around doll's waist. 1st row: Dc in 4th ch from hook, * dc in next ch, 2 dc in next ch. Repeat from * across. Ch 4, turn. 2nd row: In first dc make 2 tr, ch 3 and 3 tr; * ch 4, skip 2 dc, dc in next dc, ch 4, skip 2 dc, in next dc make 3 tr, ch 3 and 3 tr (shell made). Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: Skip first dc, dc in next dc, * 2 dc in next dc, dc in next 2 dc. Repeat from * across. Ch 3, turn. 3rd row: Skip first dc, dc in next 2 dc, * 2 dc in next dc, dc in next 3 dc. SKIRT ... Starting at waist with Chartreuse Green, make a chain 32 inches long (6 ch sts to 1 inch). 1st row: Dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: Skip first dc, dc in each dc across and in top of turning chain. Ch 3, turn. 3rd row: (Thread over hook, insert hook in first dc and draw through loop, pull loop out on hook to measure ¾ inch) 3 times; thread over and draw through all loops on hook (loose puff st made); * ch 1, skip 1 dc, make a loose puff st in next dc. DRESS—Skirt ... Starting at waist, with White ch 39 to reach loosely around doll's waist. 1st row: 2 tr in 5th ch from hook, 3 tr in each ch across. Ch 4, turn. 2nd and 3rd rows: Skip first tr, tr in each tr across, tr in top of turning chain. Ch 4, turn. Break off at end of 3rd row. 4th row: Attach Blue to first tr, ch 3, dc in each tr across, dc in top of turning chain. SKIRT ... Starting at waist with Flamingo and No. 10 hook, make a chain slightly longer than doll's waist measurement. 1st row: Dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across. Drop Flamingo. Use Black Tatting double throughout. Attach Black to last dc made and work in rnds as follows: 1st rnd: Ch 3, dc in same dc, 2 dc in each dc around. Join with sl st to top of ch-3 (back opening). Cut off remaining chain, leaving 4 chains at end of row. 2nd row: Attach White to starting chain at beginning of row, * ch 4, make tr in next 4 ch on foundation chain (this makes checkerboard design).
