Autumn Color Breakfast Doily Set Pattern #6

MATERIALS—Lily MERCROCHET Cotton size 20:—4-balls Shd. Greens, 3-balls Shd. Peaches and 2-balls each Shd. Lavenders and Shd. Blues. Lily Six Strand Floss:—4-sks. Wine and scraps of Lt. Yellow. 1-yd. linen or Indian Head in Dusty Rose. Sufficient for Center Runner and 4 Place Mats. Crochet hook No. 12.

FLOWER—With Shd. Peaches ch 7, join with sl st to form ring. ROW 1—Ch 3, 15 dc in ring. Join with sl st to top of ch-3. ROW 2—* Ch 19, sl st in one lp of 4th ch from hook for a p, (ch 4, sl st in 4th ch from hook) twice, holding back on hook the last lp of each tr, sk these 3 ps and make tr in next 2 ch, thread over and draw thru all lps on hook (Cluster made), then make 5 tr, 4 dc, 2 hdc and 2 sc in bal. of ch, sl st in next dc on ring (petal made). Repeat from * 15 times. Fasten off. Center—Split Wine Floss and using 3 threads work as for Flower thru Row 1. Fasten off with a 12" end. Thread this to a needle and sew on Flower with a ¼" long st out on each petal. Make a Lt. Yellow French Knot in center. Make 2 Flowers each in Shd. Peaches, Shd. Lavenders and Shd. Blues for each doily.

HALF FLOWER—With Shd. Peaches, ch 6, join with sl st to form ring. ROW 1—Ch 2, 12 hdc in ring, join with sl st in 1st hdc. ROW 2—* Ch 14, sl st in 4th ch from hook for a p, (ch 4, p) twice, sk these 3 ps, tr in next 2 ch made into a Cluster, then make 3 tr, 3 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc on bal. of ch, sl st in next hdc on ring. Repeat from * 5 times. Fasten off. Center—With 3 threads Wine, ch 7, join with sl st to form ring. ROW 1—Ch 2, 15 hdc in ring, join with sl st in 1st hdc. Fasten off with 8" end and sew on Flower with a ¼" long st out on each petal. Make a Lt. Yellow French Knot in center. Make 4 for each doily.

LEAF—With Shd. Greens, ch 33, dtr in 9th ch from hook, (ch 3, sk 2 ch, a long tr in next ch) 5 times. (To make long tr thread over 5 times and work off in twos as for dtr). Ch 2, sk 2 ch, dtr in next ch, ch 2, sk 2 ch, dc in next ch, ch 2, sk 2 ch, sc in next (end) ch. Working on other side of ch, ch 4, sk 2 ch, hdc in next ch, ch 4, sk 2 ch, dc in next ch, ch 4, sk 2 ch, tr in next ch, (ch 4, sk 2 ch, dtr in next ch) 4 times, ch 4, sk 2 ch, tr in next ch, ch 4, sk 3 ch, sl st in next ch.

ROW 2—Ch 1, 4 sc in next sp, sc in next st, (3 sc in next sp, sc in next st) 5 times, (2 sc in next sp, sc in next st) 3 times, ch 3, sc in same end sc, (4 sc in next sp, sc in next st) 8 times, 4 sc in next sp, join with sl st in 1st sc, ch 15 for stem. Fasten off. Make 10 of these Leaves for each doily. Make 8 more Leaves thru Row 1, then ch 1, turn and work sc around in opposite direction, reversing Row 2. Make a ch-15 stem for each Half Flower.

CENTERPIECE—Cut a piece of cloth 12 x 24 inches. Baste a ⅛" hem around edge. Draw a band of 5 threads at base of hem all around. EdgeHemstitching—Join Shd. Peaches to one corner and make 7 sc over hem into corner sp, (sk 6 or 7 threads and make 2 sc over hem) repeated around, working tightly, spacing 2-sc groups to keep edge flat and taut. Make 7 sc in each corner. Join to 1st sc and fasten off. ROW 2—With Shd. Greens make sc in 1st 3 sc at one corner, ch 5, sl st in 4th ch from hook for a p, ch 2, sk 1 sc, sc in next 3 sc, (ch 5, p, ch 2, sk 2 sc, sc in next 3 sc) repeated around with each corner like 1st one. Join and fasten off.

Following illustration, baste 3 Flowers (one in each color), 2 Half Flowers and 9 Leaves on one end. Lay a piece of tissue paper over motifs and trace around them with pencil. Lay tissue paper over this pattern and trace one for each end of each doily, using ink. Pin on cloth, baste motifs lightly thru both paper and cloth, first cutting out centers of flowers and leaves in the paper to make removal easier. Tear away paper and hem motifs down closely.

PLACE MAT—Cut cloth 12 x 18 inches and repeat as for Centerpiece.

Stretch and pin doilies right-side-down in true shape. Steam and press dry thru a cloth.
