Spring Leaves Tablecloth Pattern #1

MATERIALS—DAISY Mercerized Crochet Cotton size 20:—10-skeins White and 8-skeins Lt. Green or Lily Mercrochet Cotton size 20:—15-balls White and 11-balls Bright Nile Green.
Crochet hook No. 12
1⅔-yds. Yellow linen or rayon 40 inches wide.
Size—60 x 77 inches (to fit a 38 x 54 inch table).

BLOCKCenter—In White, ch 12, join with sl st to form ring. ROW 1—Ch 3, dc in ring, (ch 2, 2 dc in ring) 7 times, working over starting end to cover it up. Ch 2, join with sl st in top of ch-3, sl st in next dc. ROW 2—Ch 1, (sc, ch 4, sc) in next ch-2 sp, * ch 5, (sc, ch 4, sc) in next sp. Repeat from * around. Join with ch 2, dc in 1st sc. ROW 3—(Ch 8, sk ch-4 p, sc in next ch-5 lp) 8 times. Cut 6" long, thread to a needle and fasten off on back. ROW 4Leaf Wreath—Join Green with sc in one lp, * ch 6, holding back the last lp of each tr on hook, make 3 tr in 6th ch from hook, thread over and draw thru all 4 lps on hook (Cluster made), ch 7, a 3-tr Cluster in 6th ch from hook, ch 1, sc in next lp. Repeat from * 6 times. Ch 6, a 3-tr Cluster in 6th ch from hook, join with ch-1, a 4-tr Cluster in one lp of 1st sc. ROW 5—* Ch 6, a 3-tr Cluster in 6th ch from hook, ch 7, a Cluster in 6th ch from hook, ch 1, sc in center of next Cluster-lp, ch 6, a 3-tr Cluster in 6th ch from hook, ch 5, sl st in top of Cluster for a p, ch 6, sl st at base of Cluster, sc in same Cluster-lp of last row. Repeat from * 7 times. Fasten off as before. ROW 6Border—Turn, join White with sl st in center of one Cluster-lp, * ch 6, tr in p at tip of next petal, (ch 4, tr) 3 times in same p, ch 6, sc in center of next Cluster-lp. Repeat from * 7 times. ROW 7—Ch 1, turn, * 6 sc in next ch-6 sp, in each of next 3 sps make (3 sc, ch 5, sl st in last sc for a p, 3 sc), 6 sc in next ch-6 sp. Repeat from * 7 times. Join and fasten off.

2d BLOCK—Repeat thru Row 6. ROW 7—Ch 1, turn, 6 sc in next ch-6 sp, (3 sc, ch-5 p, 3 sc) in next sp, 3 sc in next sp, ch 2, sl st in center p on one point of 1st Block, ch 2, sl st back in last sc on 2d Block (joining-p made), 3 sc in same sp, 3 sc in next sp, ch 2, sl st in next p on 1st Block, ch 2, sl st back in last sc on 2d Block, 3 sc in same sp, 6 sc in next ch-6 sp. Join the next 2 ps in same way to the next 2 ps on 1st Block, then complete row as for 1st Block. Join 3d Block to the next 2 points on 2d Block, and 4th Block to 3d and 1st Blocks in same manner. This leaves 8 free ps around center opening.

FILL-IN MOTIF—Repeat Center thru Row 2. ROW 3—Ch 7, sl st in one free p around opening, ch 7, sc back in next ch-5 lp on Center, (ch 7, sl st in next free p, ch 7, sc back in next ch-5 lp) 7 times. Fasten off.

CENTERPIECE—Make and join 24 Blocks 4 x 6. EdgeROW—Join White to 1st free p on one corner Block, * ch 10, sc in 1st p on next point of same Block, (ch 8, sc in next p) twice. * Repeat from * to * 3 times around corner Block, ch 10, sc in next (final) p, ch 14, sc in 1st free p on next Block. Repeat from * to * twice, ch 10, sc in next p. Continue around in same way with ch-14 between Blocks, ch-8 lps between ps and ch-10 between points. ROW 2—Ch 3, 2 dc in next lp made into a Cluster, 8 dc in bal. of same lp, dc in sc, * (8 dc in next ch-8, dc in sc) twice, 10 dc in ch-10, dc in sc. * Repeat from * to * twice, (8 dc in next sp, dc in sc) twice, 8 dc in next ch-10, (2 dc in same lp, dc in sc and 2 dc in next ch-14 lp) all made into a Cluster, 10 dc in same lp, (2 dc in bal. of lp, dc in sc and 2 dc in next ch-10 lp) all made into a Cluster, 8 dc in bal. of same lp, dc in sc. Repeat from * to * once, (8 dc in next lp, dc in sc) twice. Continue around in same way. Join to top of 1st Cluster and fasten off.

BORDER—For each side of cloth, make and join 60 Blocks 3 x 20. Connect these 2 bands at ends with bands made of 30 Blocks joined 3 x 10. Work the 2 rows of "Edge" around both sides of this Border. Stretch and pin crochet right-side-down in true shape. Inside edge of Border should measure size of table (38 x 54 inches). Add or subtract Blocks to fit any other size table. Steam and press crochet thru a cloth until dry. Cut cloth 2 inches larger than size of table. Baste Centerpiece in center of cloth, then hem edge of crochet down closely. Cut cloth inside stitching, turn edge back against crochet and hem down on back of dc-Edge Row. Baste Border around edge of cloth and finish in same way. Steam and press cloth smooth.
